Lost, Is This Show The Devil

I hate to steal a line from the Waterboy's mom, but Lost is the devil!

So, I watched two episodes of Lost this weekend and this assessment was only reinforced. First, I watched the 16th episode from the current season. And, I thought I had finally hit paydirt. After being roped into this devil of a show by a DVD set of the first season that my sister insisted I give a try only to be strung along for a total of 39 episodes before this weekend, finally an episode came along that was almost completely devoid of hooks. It literally put me to sleep.

Unfortunately, after a most refreshing nap I decided to watch the second episode, I had already downloaded it after all. This was my worst decision in recent memory. After getting to the point where I thought I'd finally lost enough interest in Lost to kick the habit they snuck in an episode that was actually interesting. They do this every few months it seems just to drive me insane. Ok, maybe the interesting episode is not to drive me insane, but the never-ending cliff-hangers and 100 different plot lines going at once that are never completed? Definitely there just to test my sanity.

At least there's actually a new episode this week. Usually after an interesting episode comes at least three weeks without a new episode.

So, if you're looking for the devil, I've found it. Care to join me in weekly visits?

Best take on "lost" I've heard ...

... was attributed to frontiersman Daniel Boone. Near the end of his life, Boone was asked if ever he was lost. The reply: "No, I can't say as I was ever lost, but I was bewildered once for three days."

Wonder if he would have called sitting in front of the TV "bewildered time". :)

I actually really like 'Lost'...

but I don't watch it. :( I started watching it @ the beginning of Season 2... and then missed a few episodes and decided it'd be better to wait for the whole thing to come out on DVD. I still haven't seen all of Season 1 either...

It kills me sometimes, because I'll read these really great articles about different theories ... just last week EW had an article about the map of the Island and I was totally... Lost ;-)

So do you have any theories of your own? The most interesting one I've heard is that they're all just part of a big experiment and all those "flashbacks" they have are really just implanted memories to explain why they're there... but none of them actually happened.

Anyway, I hope you keep writing about this show... I might even start watching it again if you do. :)

Well, you see...

People with theories about this show have really great imaginations, but most aren't particularly practical.

I mean, any theory as large in scope as that they are all guinea pigs in an experiment can never come to fruition. If it did, the show would be over.

For the same reason, they can never be rescued.

All you can ever get answers to are the small plot lines being carried forward with a few larger ones throughout the season that really don't give away much. And, even when a question is answered it is rarely a satisfactory answer and every answer just leads to more questions.

That's what keeps the show going.

A fantastic example of this for anyone who watches the show would be the "hatch."

Get the hatch open, go inside, nothing is really answered, but there's plenty of new questions... to tease at... every... single... episode.

Maybe Lost isn't the devil, maybe it's just the scab the devil can't stop picking at.

About 'Lost'

Well you seem to have a good understanding of the show... so if you keep writing, I'll keep reading...

And I still like the theory I mentioned...even if it's not practical ;-)

You really think they'll never be rescued? :-/

Missed some episodes

I missed too many episodes to even have the slightest clue of what is going on now, but my father is addicted. He loves this show so much that he is constantly explaining it. I think I am going to borrow a boxed aet and catch up on it. Definately original material.

I think that's what's

I think that's what's brilliant about the show. They can maintain 40000 separate storylines, where most shows really struggle to pull off one. True, their episodes are either hit or miss. When they are good, they are very, very good. When they are bad, they are UGLY!

The biggest problem I have is that they will never be able to meet the level which the fans have built it up to being. Speaking for myself, I was very caught up last season in trying to figure out what the numbers meant. And then early this season, I read an interview with someone in charge at the show, and they said the numbers are really unimportant. WTF??? How can the numbers be unimportant?? Why introduce them if they are meaningless? What other storylines are unimportant that seem important and vice versa?? I realized at that point that they will never be able to satisfy me.

It was around that point when I decided that I just don't care anymore. So what if Hurley was crazy? Who cares whether Henry Gale is an Other? Does it really matter whether Walt is good or evil?? And against all my expectations, the show became more enjoyable. All I need is a peek at Mr. Eko, and I'm a happy girl, and that has nothing to do with his storyline... lol

My last word on Lost

I've not seen the show. The "stranded on an island" theme was fulfilled for me by Willam Golding's Lord of the Flies. I have not had much of an urge to revisit it.
