Losing Time: My WAHM Challenge

busy | TIME MANAGEMENT | WAHM

Is it really Saturday already? Time sure flies when you are busy.

My freelance business goes in cycles. Since I have to wait for my clients to give me their content, I can't start on the project until I get their information. So I tend to have a couple of slower weeks in between projects, and then I get slammed for the next week or two.

This is one of those weeks. I am struggling to keep up with it all. The kids don't seem to understand that it would really help me if they would suddenly start taking care of themselves and be self-sufficient during these busier times (of course, since they are only three I suppose maybe I AM expecting too much...)

My husband seems to think I still need to help with housework and make meals. My body seems to think I still need sleep.

Since my "regular life" and its busy demands don't stop or even ease up during my busier times, I find myself challenged to keep up with it all and still find time to sleep.

Here are some of the ways I've found to at least help make my life a little easier, although I still have a lot of room for improvement/better time management (and I still need to find a way to get more sleep):
1. Automate ALL monthly bills on my bank's website.
2. Lower my standards of housecleaning and leave some of it until after my deadline.
3. Use once-a-month cooking (I go to Super Suppers or Dream Dinners) and make frozen meals or crockpot meals during my busy times.
4. Delegate more childcare tasks and putting the kids to bed to my husband.
5. Write to do lists and goals to keep focused on current tasks.
6. Prioritize the MUST accomplish TODAY, need to manage in the next couple days, and nice to get done but not critical (A, B, and C priorities) within my list.

I'd love to hear more ideas about how you manage your time too.

Better time management is something I think we all dream of...

Several of your ideas look as though I may be able to incorporate them into my life. Unfortunately, lowering my standard of housecleaning is not one of them; my present standard is already about as low as I can possibly go without the powers that be coming in to condemn my house. :(

lol

I know what you mean, some days I feel that way too! Especially during my busy times.

I never seem to fully recover during my "down" times either, but when I am making enough, I do hire a cleaner at times to come in and help!

I figure it's a trade off, and I want to be able to work but I know I can't do it all, so if I spend 10% of what I make on cleaning help, it's worth it to me.

See, now you made me share my "dirty little secret". I sometimes feel like it's a copout but I know my house suffers MUCH less when I call in a little help. And we can't do EVERYTHING, so this is one I choose to option out when I can!

You've listed most things that I do

I work during naptimes (except right now, while I'm pregnant with #2, now I sleep during naptimes). I allow the TV to babysit sometimes. I get many of my email lists in digest form so I can skim and delete (that has been a huge timesaver - I'm on several lists).

Good post!

good idea

good idea about the email digest, I hadn't thought of that. And good idea to sleep while you can when pg too. :)

I do use the t.v. at times, usually during breakfast at lunch so they will sit still and eat for 30-45 minutes rather than 10, and I can get a few things done.

Timesaving for writers

I use a lot of these strategies as well. My husband quite often does breakfast and bedtime routines, which gives me time to deal with anything urgent. I still feel that I don't have enough time but at least this allows me to get SOME work done - and the microwave is my friend :-)

YES!

Oh, I LOVE it when my husband takes over, especially at bedtime, but he'll only do that when I have an actual deadline for billable hours.

When I'm trying to do my own writing/work, he's like "no way!" We're still working on that one.

It helps so much to have that time though. I do most of my working around the kids' nap and bedtime schedules. I have my kids lay down for quiet time most days - even if they don't sleep. I let them take a book or quiet toy if they are not tired. It gives them some down time/alone time, plus I get a break and get to get something done too!

I deal with Sears Parts on a daily basis and my strategy in keeping it safe is to plan whatever I have to do early in the morning. Otherwise, I risk not knowing what to do or even what to change to have the work done properly.
