So I was reading a comment yesterday from deorre about people being drawn to train wrecks, and I thought to myself..wow I have a real story about a train wreck. And to top it all off, it actually has some substance! So without further adieu, here is my train wreck story.
Our story begins on a cold and snowy night at Scott AFB. Someone chooses to leave their car parked on the railroad tracks. We aren't talking about a car parked on the intersection of the tracks and the road..no no! Someone drove their car through a field and up onto the tracks. Now, we actually have a lot of railroad traffic, and I believe that they are required to maintain a considerably high rate of speed when passing through the base, due to security issues. Regardless, the trains generally travel about 45 - 55 mph. So naturally a train comes along and BAM! smashes into the car, dragging it a good 1000 feet. The Security Forces personnel on the base arrive on scene to a completely demolished vehicle crushed under the front of the train. They immediately begin searching the sides of the tracks for body parts and remains, as there does not appear to be a body still in the vehicle.
This ensues for some time before a man contacts Security Forces, informing them that it was his vehicle. He is immediately apprehended and taken for a medical examination. The interesting bit of the story however is that this individual is the spouse of a Colonel on the base. Despite LEAVING his vehicle parked on the train tracks and wasting countless hours of Security Forces members, not to mention endangering the lives of those aboard the train and in the immediate area, no action was taken against this individual and the ENTIRE event was covered up and kept very hush-hush. To this point very few people on base know that it even happened! It's somewhat sad to think that rank can buy your husband out of trouble and cover up the entire ordeal. Colonel isn't even that high ranking when you consider that there are 13 Generals stationed at Scott! Appalling!
