The Port of Liverpool Building, pictured, is one of three marvellous buildings adorning Liverpool’s waterfront
So here’s another in a series of articles I am planning to share with you in reference to the 2008 European Capital of Culture, the city of Liverpool here in the United Kingdom
The plan is, I’m going to research places of interest around the city, then get out and about and visit these places, take some photographs, and then post an article about each place
I’m hoping this will be a useful travel guide for visitors to the city, without giving too much away because I don’t want to spoil any surprises for you!
The three marvellous buildings mentioned are actually known as ‘The Three Graces’, the other two being the Royal Liver Building and the Cunard Building
Built in 1907, it was designed by Arnold Thornley with Briggs and Wolstenholme, and is now a Grade II listed building
The building, it has been suggested, was originally designed as a competition entry for the building of Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, of course this entry didn’t actually win the competition but thank goodness it didn’t go to waste
The building was originally the home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, today one of the city’s top visitor attractions and well worth a look inside, especially if you enjoy beautiful architecture and are interested in the history of Liverpool
Whilst you’re in this part of the city you may also like to visit:
The Merseyside Maritime Museum
The Tate Gallery
Mersey Ferries
The Cavern Quarter
The Albert Dock
You are also a short walk from Liverpool’s vibrant city centre
Can’t wait to see you la!
