Liverpool Capital of Culture Tour

Pictured above is probably one of the most famous waterfronts in the world, and is the gateway, for those arriving by ship, to the wonderful city of Liverpool, England

Here’s another in a series of articles I am planning to share with you in reference to the 2008 European Capital of Culture, the city of Liverpool here in the United Kingdom

I’m getting out and about to research places of interest around the city, taking some photographs, and then posting an article about each place

I’m hoping this will be a useful travel guide for visitors to the city, without giving too much away because I don’t want to spoil any surprises for you!

The three buildings in the forefront of the picture are the Liver Building, the Cunard Building, and the Port of Liverpool Building, known collectively as The Three Graces

Now, if you’re not arriving by ship, but would still like to see the waterfront from the water, then help is at hand, in the form of probably the most famous ferry service in the world – Mersey Ferries

The Mersey Ferries have been in operation for many years, and were actually recorded in the Doomsday Book, although the boats have been upgraded since then so don’t panic!

They have also been immortalised in the film ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ and the Gerry Marsden song of the same name

If you’re not familiar with the song, you will be if you take a trip on a Mersey Ferry, as it plays in the background in between the commentary provided about Liverpool’s, Birkenhead’s and Seacombe’s history during your trip (the ferry stops at Seacombe and Birkenhead if you want to hop off to explore)

Anyway, this post wouldn’t be complete without sharing the song with you, and it goes like this:

(Gerry Marsden)

Life goes on day after day
Hearts torn in every way

So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay

People they rush everywhere
Each with their own secret care

So ferry 'cross the Mersey
and always take me there
The place I love

People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don't care what your name is boy
We'll never turn you away

So I'll continue to say
Here I always will stay

So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay
and here I'll stay
Here I'll stay

And, pictured here, the Royal Daffodil, standing by for another trip today

Liverpool Capital of Culture Tour

A Ferry Cross the Mersey lasts about 50 minutes on a round trip, there is a cafe and bar on board if you’re feeling peckish or thirsty, and for fares we paid £4.95 for adults (the baby was free), and it’s really a must for visitors to the city (check your sea legs first though, as it can be a little choppy on the Mersey in certain weather conditions)

If you ARE visiting – can’t wait to see you la!
