Set in 500 acres of beautiful park, and visited by over 200,000 people in 2005, Croxteh Hall is the ancestral home of the Molyneux family, the Earls of Sefton, and is open to visitors
The hall is set in the heart of Croxteth Park, one of the many parks and green lands to be found in the 2008 European Capital of Culture, the city of Liverpool here in the United Kingdom
It was the ancestral home of the Molyneux family, who lived here from the sixteenth century right up until the last Earl died in 1972. On the Earl's death, the park was then given to the city of Liverpool and has been enjoyed by young and old alike ever since, and admission to the park is free
The Hall is open to visitors, and shows life both above and below stairs, with the help of costumed Heritage Volunteers who are on hand to answer any questions. The volunteers attend on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons
Along with the great hall, there are numerous other attractions within the park including the Croxteth Home Farm
This is a real working farm where children and adults can enjoy the sights and sounds (and smells!) of the farm animals close up
The Victorian Walled Garden once supplied the big house with fresh fruit and vegetables and flowers and was, no doubt, used as a place to sit and relax by the family. Today it is tranquil place to sit and relax, where you can single out some ideas for your own garden or simply enjoy the classic kitchen garden from the Victorian era
If the children want to burn up some energy, there is a large children's play area, and close by a souvenir and gift shop if the grown ups want to go off to browse
There are also, of course, plenty of walks through the park and gardens
After all that, if you're feeling peckish there is a cafeteria located next to the hall
