The Famous Cavern Club – Cavern Quarter, Matthew Street, Liverpool
As part of this series of articles I am planning to share with you in reference to the 2008 European Capital of Culture, the city of Liverpool here in the United Kingdom, I would like to share some recommendations of great things to do and see during your visit
The following itinerary would be good especially if you’re a Beatles fan, but also want to see some of this fabulous city:
10.00 am
Arrive at the Albert Dock, if you’re arriving by car, park on the Albert Dock car park, but make sure you have change with you for parking as you’ll struggle to find anywhere nearby to get change
Also, make sure you cover the cost of your parking stay in the pay and display, you don’t want to be clamped on your day out, do you? (I only mention this because many have)
Walk through to the Albert Dock (it’s free to enter) check out the shops, and take a stroll along one of the most famous water fronts in the world
11.00
Still at the Albert Dock, visit The Beatles Story and take a look at The Beatles treasures on display and get a real feel of the sixties in the recreation of The Cavern - some might prefer The Tate Gallery
12.00 noon
Back along the waterfront and take a 'Ferry Cross the Mersey'.Check your sea legs first though, as it can get quite choppy out on the river!
Pleasure trips take you along the river with a commentary telling you lots of interesting facts about the city, and you can sing along to Gerry Marsden’s ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ - grab a coffee and sandwich whilst you admire the views and take some great pictures - some might prefer to head straight for the shops
1.00 pm
Stroll up to the city centre, and walk in the footsteps of John, Paul, George and Ringo around the Cavern Quarter, take a look at the Cavern Club (pictured) and call in to The Beatles Shop on Matthew Street - maybe have a pint in The Grapes Pub - some may prefer to carry on looking round the shops
3.00 pm
Back to the Albert Dock and go through The Maritime Museum and Museum of Liverpool Life
Both are interactive and have characters from the eras explaining what Liverpool was like in days gone by
Kids love it by the way (it's definitely NOT a draughty and dusty old place displaying broken pots!)
That should take you through to about five o’clock and maybe time for home but…
If you’re staying in the local area, you could take a drive up to Southport, a seaside resort about a 45 minute drive from here, which has a great fun fair, pier, gardens, boating lake, and a whole lot more, and a lot of fun for the children in the evening, especially in summer
Admission charges apply to some of the above (a walk round the Albert Dock is free!)but none of the above charge a silly amount for entrance, although it might be a little painful for the average man taking a family of four to see ALL these attractions - but what the heck - you're on your holidays!
Please help us develop this blog by posting your comments – thanks for looking!
Can’t wait to see you la!
