Liverpool Capital of Culture Tour - The Picton Round House

DSCF1466

Welcome to my Liverpool Capital of Culture 2008 blog

The aim of this blog is to bring you some information and pictures of the city of Liverpool , here in the United Kingdom

I'm also hoping this will become a useful guide to visitors to the city, without giving too much information away as I don't want to spoil your own explorations

Today's feature is the Picton Round House, yet another great place to visit, and totally free!

The Picton Round House

This is the Picton Round House, one of Liverpool’s many listed buildings

Although it is known as ‘The Round House’, it is, in fact, octagonal

It was built in 1796 as an overnight lock up for drunks, waifs and strays!

However, the lock up function of the Round House became defunct in 1845, as the first village police station had opened

It was occasionally employed after this to isolate victims of disease and to provide a roof for the night for the destitute

The Round House is a stone's throw from Picton Clock

I had never come across this kind of establishment before coming to Liverpool, however, after carrying out a little research, it transpires there is not one but two such buildings in the city

The second is located on the Everton village green (article on this coming soon) and is actually the ‘stone jug’ which is on the emblem of Everton Football Club (article on this coming soon)

So, with finding these two lock ups for drunks, I started to wonder how many of these buildings may have been around in the 18th century, and I wonder if they worked as a deterrent for binge drinking

‘You thinking what I’m thinking?

The Round House is located on the green in Lakeside Road, close to the Picton Clock, in Wavertree

While you are in this part of the city you may also like to visit:

The Yellow Submarine
The old airport – now a Marriot Hotel
Speke Hall – a National Trust House
John Lennon’s house – a National Trust House
Eleanor Rigby’s grave
St Peter’s church – the place John and Paul first met
John Lennon bronze

Can't wait to see you la!
