Some time ago there were referenda held in France and Holland on a possible EU constitution. Both The French and the Dutch voted a very definite and resounding "NO" at 55% and 61% respectively. The UK goverment breathed a huge sigh of relief and said a promised referendum in Britain had been rendered unnecessary by the two no votes. It daren't put a referendum to the people because they know that the British would definitely vote no.
There is now a sneaky scheme afoot to get the constitution in by the back door. The new French President, Nicholas Sarkozy is very much in favour, so is the German Chancellor and so is the British Government. What they propose to do is to make the constitution a treaty which can be signed by governments over the heads of the people. How can that be when people of two countries have voted against it and another certainly would? How can a government in defiance of the known wishes of the people they are supposed to serve, go behind the people's backs and do whatever they please? How is that representing the people?
The British people have never had a vote on the European Union, they voted to join a Common Market ( a kind of free trade area), not a United States of Europe. The people do not want ever-closer political Union, the UK government should put the referendum to the British people, and the French and Dutch governments should pay heed to their own people, who have already said "no", and not be trying to weasel this unwanted constitution through.
