Lots of people are trying to get to the top of Google, but very few make it. They rely on their page rank, which is not enough anymore. To get the best results, you have to have links to your page. This tells Google that your page is considered important on the world wide web. Look at Hotmail. In exchange for giving free email, they place a link in the email. So now, hotmail links are all over the internet. This is similar to what google is looking for.

Blogs are some of the best methods of using links, because of their nature. Often they are on a blog host, and some, like Bloggerparty, are blogging communities. They function almost more like message boards, but where each individual has complete control over their content. Links are easy to implant in blogs, and many people read them. In addition to sales, they can increase the number of "back links" or links to your site. Reciprocal links used to be an easy way to go, but businesses aren't likely to increase link popularity by taking visitors away from their site and onto another.
