LIfe In My Space
I went to the hospital this morning and saw my mom. I had called my sister-in-law on my way there because she was going to meet me. We walked into the room and mama was awake and watching TV. She smiled as we walked in so I think she was happy to see us. We asked her how she was and she said she hadn't slept all night long. Apparently one of the drugs they are giving her has a steroid in it and one of the side effects is uncontrolable shaking. She proved this to us when she sat up in the bed and was trying to get a bite of ice out of a cup with a spoon and lost most of her ice while trying to get it to her mouth. We laughed, as did she. She thought it was funny too. She said it was annoying and that before we had gotten there she had actually spilled the ice all over the floor. She had again commented also on the fact that she didn't get any sleep due to the shaking. She had asked the nurse for something but they had to talk to the Dr before they could give her anything to help her sleep.
Also she is on an antibiotic that will make her blood sugar level elevate. We knew that yesterday as they had told us that when they gave her the drug. But as it turns out, that medicine made her blood sugar level really go out of control. Therefore they had to give her insulin today a couple of times. It seems that they give one drug for one thing and that causes a side effect that then calls for another drug. It really worries me with all these drugs.
She also mentioned that they hadn't given her the meds she takes on a daily basis. I went to the front desk to ask about that and they said they just hadn't gotten it from the pharmacy yet but would get them to her soon. Later I found out they had eventually gotten her the meds. One of the drugs she takes is cumadin and it very important as she has a high risk for blood clots.
The Dr came in while we were there and looked her over. She seems to not be coughing anything like she was when we took her in there, so that is good. He did tell the nurse she could have something to help her sleep so I guess that what good. Maybe toinght she will rest.
I did go back to the hospital again this evening and being she is not on a restricted diet ( I actually went to the nurse's desk to ask about this. Due to her elevtated blood sugar and the fact that they were giving her insulin, I didn't want to bring her anything that would harm her. The nurse told me usually with an elevated blood sugar that called for insulin that was caused my a medication, they didn't restrict the diet) I took her some lasagna that I had made today for our New Years dinner. She was very happy about that and ate as much as she could. She wanted me to put the foil back on the plate and she was going to save it for later. YUCK. She had no way to heat it up. I told her I would bring her some more tomorrow if she wanted more, but we weren't leaving the lasagna sitting out at room temperature all night.
My aunt, my mom's sister, called while I was there and they had a nice visit. My mom moved back here to Oklahoma a year ago December from Florida and I know she really misses her sister. She is the only family she has. Her other sister passed away a couple of years ago. Anyway, mama was really getting very horse, even before my aunt called and by the end of the conversation, some words spoken were just a whisper.
I left the hospital tonight feeling better about the fact that she wasn't coughing so hard she thought her head was going to explode. But also feeling anxious about all the side effects. Even though she told me to quit running back and forth to see her, I will be going back in the morning.
While leaving, my brother pulled up with his son. He has been here for Christmas after bootcamp with the army. He leaves tomorrow at about 4 to get on a plane that will take him to Maryland for the next step in his training. He is going to be in the field of generator maintenance and repair. He will be there for 11 weeks and then I guess he will find out where he is going from there. I sure hope he gets to stay in the US. Guess we will find out in 11 weeks though. It sure was good to see him while he was here. The army has done him so much good. He was going nowhere and on drugs and really just bumming around with his life going in no direction at all. He actually didn't pass his drug test the first or second time he tried to join. But the third time he made it. Praise God
I noticed such a change in him, from a messed up boy, to a man. We are all so proud of the route is has taken to better himself.
