Learning you Write Better than you Thought

So I got on here and found a bunch of freelance writing sites. I started looking and found a few. And I've sold a few things on Associated Content. I know I write ok but I have to say that after getting paid more than I thought I would for two articles, I have to be better than I give myself credit for. I don't say this to be cocky but it's a breakthrough for me because I won't be thinking that I can't do a job anymore because I have bad writing skills.

One of the articles I did the pay was between $20-30. I got paid $25. I was thrilled and shocked. The other was one that said would pay $1-2. yes that's low but at the time I had no other writing offers coming back so I took it. When I was given the assignment I was told it would be $4.50. After I wrote the first draft, the lady sent it back to me to be revised and said she would pay good for the article. I finished it and got paid $7. Now that's nowhere near $25 but it's much better than $1-2. So obviously I write pretty well. She even gave me two more assignments to do instead of one.

So my advice is write for someone and know you probably are better than you think. And if they pay you more than the minimum (when there's a range) or higher than they orginally say, you have to be a pretty decent writing.

Have faith in yourself and your skills.

questions

how long did it take to write both articles? i'm just thinking of the time/effort it takes and to get compensated $1-$2?

The $1-2 ones took a little

The $1-2 ones took a little bit of time because they are for a travel magazine. I had to do some research on the state I was required to write about. The writing process itself wasn't that bad. About and hour and half. THe research is what killed me. But the next writing assignment had one of the states as my own so that took much less time. And the other one I haven't started yet but know some things about it. It was just the first one that really got me because I really didn't know anything about it. It would have sucked to have gotten paid only $1-2 but I'm still new at this and have learned that networking is one of the most important things in this business.

Cost to Benefit

I have been doing exactly what she is talking about for about 10 months now, and have been doing it as my whole income for about three. Early on, you have to take those one and two dollar gigs to get yourself rolling. Later on, though, as I'm sure Diane will find, you have to start weighing time versus money.

I know exactly what you mean Diane. When you first get going, you can't believe that you are getting paid to write and that someone is acknowledging what you have done.

Also, she is right, associated content is a fantastic place to get yourself going.

I'm Curious

How you found the markets your write for consistenly? Networking, doing those smaller paying jobs that led to bigger ones within the same company, other companies seeing your work and hearing from the smaller markets? How?
