Keeping The Hulking Boy In Prison

child prosecution | juvenile laws | murder | prison reform

Yeah, this is a good one to move into 5th place in points with.

There's this story about someone named Craig Price. At age 15, he was arrested and sentenced to juvenile prison for killing four people in cold blood. One of the women he stabbed 62 times; another 58 times. Oh yeah, the one stabbed 62 times wasn't really a woman; she was a 10-year old girl. And the kid showed no remorse for anything he'd done; all he complained about was cutting his own hand during one of the attacks.

Anyway, the problem with all of this is that, in Rhode Island, he could only be sentenced to a prison term until his 21st birthday, where he'd get paroled, and his record would be expunged. The other problem is that he said that, when he was released, he was going to "smoke a bomber"; nothing else needs to be said.

So, the district attorney and one of the investigators who found the bodies worked together to try to change some of the laws. Over the years, they've been able to get really creative in ways to keep this kid in jail. Meanwhile, he'd gotten bigger. When arrested, he was 5'10" and 240 pounds, he was much taller and heavier after being in prison, over 300 pounds of muscle; why do they allow prisoners to lift weights? They finally got him on a odd law they created where they got him for a "parole" violation while he was still in prison, not only for repeated prison problems, but for threatening to kill a prison guard in front of the judge. They've now been able to affectively keep him in prison until his next true parole hearing,... the year 2020.

Usually I might be on a rant on how it's somewhat unfair for the legal system to change its rules like this. After all, most laws aren't retroactive in this fashion. If a criminal commits a crime, then the law changes where it might benefit the offender, that person can't suddenly suffer a harsher sentence. Yet, I also have problems with some of our laws where obviously guilty people with very bad backgrounds and track records are allowed to skate the system in some way and are allowed to get back out and commit the next bit of crime that all of us knew was coming. So, I have to admit that there are times when I believe someone really does deserve whatever it is they get.

So, let's see how everyone else feels about things like this, as we move into the new year.

too scary

Clearly, the boy has no soul and is where he belongs.

Catfish what about putting this obviously

very sick individual in therapy? I don't like the idea of this kid ever getting out of prison, but at the same time if we start changing laws to keep someone in jail, who's to say we wont change laws to suit our own agendas? WAIT a sec...it already happens all the time in DC ...so yeah. Anarchy is but a small price to pay eh?

Catfish's picture

I think he was in therapy, Sassys,...

but by law (see how this keeps coming up?), they could only make him go while he was still under age 18. After that, unless being declared insane, they couldn't make him go, and he still wasn't showing any remorse for the murders.

Like I said, this is a tough case for someone like me who likes to believe in the law, but also realizes that, every once in awhile, there's just a major league bad seed that the existing laws don't cover. Truthfully, I want to see Manson get out before this kid.

therapy won't help

I believe the law has to catch up with the 21st century. Even though there are some who might disagree with the way they are keeping him in jail. I think that crimes should be looked at individually. In this case the streets are safer.

I understand, Step,...

Overall, law treats people like children in school, where the teacher punishes the entire class because of something one kid did. A change in the laws, plus recognizing a truly bad seed when one presents themselves, is needed so that the truly evil can really be punished and taken out of the hair of everyone else.

Well the year 2020 is only a scant

Sassys
12 years away Catfish. I wonder what the hell could have turned this once 15 year old kid, into the absolute abomination he became? Why did he snap? What sets him off? There is bound to be one hell of a story here. He is clearly a very sick guy, and when I say he needs intense therapy, that does not mean I think he should ever be allowed to be "free" and amungst normal people, he is definately a threat. Can he be cured? Doubtful. Should we try? Yes we should. Else those poor people he killed, will have died in vain. He may very well not be reedeemable, but what about redeeming ourselves? I am NOT saying he should be set free, EVER. But he should be at least studied, and the more we learn, the better chances we have of hopefully avoiding another one just like him.

I'm with you, Sassys,...

not sure if you remember a post I wrote back on BF a long time ago about how I'd reform prisons if I were in charge and could get away with it. There would be no way this kid would be an even more dangerous killer while in prison, and he'd be having mandatory counseling until the experts were sure he was safe, which could still be forever. Anything else outside of that, he'd just be sitting around turning into a lump of nothing.

This is a perfect example of that "gray" area...

a river
...that we are forced to deal with. I, for one don't think he should be on the street. For the safety of all. However, the bigger issue is what about when its done to someone who doesn't "deserve" it? What if its my nephew? What if its your child? I mean, when we start letting someone's liberty be violated, we open the door to allow our own to be taken away. We must be careful with knee-jerk reactions. Just reading your blog about how this guy was dealt with initially, I'm convinced this guy is not a person of color. Which lends itself to the issue of the disparity of justice in this country anyway. All I'm saying is, if they can trump up charges to keep a killer in jail, they can trump up some to keep an innocent man in jail also. PEACE!

Unfortunately, numbdeplum,...

he is a person of color:

And he was this big at 15; scary! Course, I could easily turn this into another story about how the man is keeping black people down, but it doesn't fit in this case, as it does in the case of the guy who was just released after being in prison, what, 21 years for a crime he didn't commit?

There's actually an 11-part series on the story of this crime, which can be accessed by this link: http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/predators/craig_price/index.html
