However, by the end of the tour to promote 1983's triple-platinum LP Frontiers the band was beginning to splinter. The following year, Perry struck out on his own with a successful solo release, Street Talk and the band was undergoing personnel changes which would see them be reduced to a three-piece core and a far slicker sound for Frontiers' followup. In many ways, "Only The Young" marked the end of Journey's run in its classic hitmaking incarnation.

The song had actually appeared on Scandal's 1984 album The Warrior and even received a smattering of airplay from some AOR(album-oriented rock) stations. Journey's version wouldn't arrive until the spring of '85 as a cut on the soundtrack to the movie "Vision Quest." With a muscular melody and soaring chorus - and with the movie becoming a hit with the teen crowd - "Only The Young" rocketed up the US charts, becoming Journey's fifth Top Ten hit in a little more than three years.
