Job-hunting at Work

Are you satisfied with your job? If the answer is "no," you probably aren't surprised that you're not alone. About 50% of Americans are unhappy with their jobs, but for many with family and financial responsibilities, quitting is not an option, at least not until they have found another job. Many remedy this by searching for that new employer at work.

According to a survey by the Hudson Employment Index, nearly a quarter of workers in the United States who use computers at work admit that they use it for job searching purposes. Even among employees who think thier use of the Internet might be monitored, many still use company computers for job-hunting.

Now this definitely sounds unwise. After all, if your Internet use is being monitored or the office gossip makes regular stops at your desk, such activities won't remain a secret for long. Wouldn't it be best to wait and do this at home? Why jeopardize your job by searching for another on company time?

While I can't speak for others, I can give a few reasons why I would consider doing this, and I'm thinking many others would agree. One obvious reason is the time issue. We spend a lot of time at work these days, often more than 40 hours a week, and life outside of work can be just as busy and stressful. Sometimes the only time you have to do this is during spare moments at work. Another reason might be that if your job situation is that bad, you just want out of there and don't care who knows.

I can relate to being in a less than satisfying job situation. However, searching for work when you're on the clock seems a bit rude (not that I'm completely innocent in this regard), and besides, more and more employers are monitoring computer and Internet activity. Obviously, the best time to do this is on your own time, assuming you have any. If time doesn't permit and you feel you must do your job-hunting at work, keep it limited and be careful.
