Jim Steinman "Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through"
Producer and composer Jim Steinman first crossed paths with singer Marvin Lee Aday, better known as Meat Loaf, when the latter was in the cast of an off-Broadway musical penned by the former. Several years later, the two formed a creative team as Steinman wrote and produced Meat Loaf's phenomenally successful Bat Out Of Hell debut/ Released in 1978, that album spawned a trio of US Top 40 singles and was one of the best-selling albums of the '70s.
By 1981, Steinman had grown weary of waiting for Meat Loaf to be able to record a follow-up to Bat Out Of Hell. Instead, Steinman opted to record the songs he had readied himself, releasing Bad For Good as a solo album under his name. If it were not for Steinman's voice, which possessed far less of the vocal heft of Meat Loaf's, it is easy to envision Bad For Good as the follow-up.
All of the other elements that made Bat Out Of Hell a multi-platinum seller are in place. The production is a wall of sound, dramatic and overblown and the lyrics, dealing with teenage hormones and teenage angst, are equally so. Lifted from the set as a single, "Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through" was an epic testament to the power of rock music, complete with a background choir lending to the drama.
In mid-July, the song became Steinman's one and only US Top 40 hit as a solo artist. It only managed to spend six weeks in the Top 40, topping out at #32 while on the album rock chart, it did somewhat better, reaching #14. However, more than a decade later, Steinman and Meat Loaf would reunite on the massive comeback album Bat Out Of Hell II and Meat Loaf's version of "Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through," taken as the second single from the album, would climb to #13 on the pop charts in early 1994.
