Jim Lane Is An Idiot

film critic | free papers | Jim Lane | sacramento | sn&r

Yep, Jim Lane is an idiot, and, I'm sure you're asking just who he is. Well, he's a film critic for a free Sacramento paper called SN&R. Ok, so everyone hates film critics, so why bother to single this moron out? Allow me to explain.......

I picked up this rag today (which totally pales compared to it's prettier twin in Philadelphia, by the way) and sat outside flipping through it's pages while the kid played on her new scooter. I found the movie section and looked to see what was playing locally. Spotting the review section, I skimmed it to see what's still out there currently. Imagine my shock (sarcasm) to see that the J-horror remake 'One Missed Call' was given a bad review! Hey, I flat-out, hands-down refuse to see it! Most remakes of that kind are horrid and an embarrassment!

But, what I take issue with is this moron bashing the original film! Ok, opinion is one thing, but don't have the nerve to bash a film when you've clearly NOT SEEN IT! First, this Mensa-reject makes this comment about the remake - "It's just another English-language remake of yet another incomprehensible Japanese horror film". Dude, if you're too dim to understand J-horror, you need an new job! J-horror uses the most basic of premises for the genre. And, in 'One Missed Call' it was pretty fricken EASY to follow! If you'd actually taken the time to watch it, you would have seen that for yourself, asshat.

But, what really brings it home that this doof didn't see the original (in reference to the "derelict building" used in the movie) the arrogant use of parenthetical's to add this statemtent : "This time, a burned-out hospital". THIS TIME???? THIS TIME???? What movie were YOU watching???? In the original, the scene you're talking about takes place in an abandoned HOSPITAL!

Seriously, why is this idiot allowed to reveiw movies??? I thought one at least needed to be a film school drop-out to acquire one of these postions. But, even an angry, rejected screenwriter would have enough sense to actually watch a movie before bashing it! Although, I guess it's telling that pretty much all the films he was given to review where the crap or teen-geared movies. Hopefully this means the editor has enough sense to keep him away from the films that really deserve a good critic!

spooky, chances are

he probably thinks no one is going to read it given the paper that it's in and the types of films he reviews; knowing full well that the audience it is geared toward probably couldn't read it unless it was in leet text message speak.

Therefore, he takes free license with being an ass and, in the unlikely event that someone actually reads it and gets pissed off, hopes that someone will call him on his bullshit because it will give him some warped sense of fullfilment. Because then he will know that someone actually did read his crap.

Come and see what I'm rambling about now

Ah, Sean

You make a good point! I'm sure he also figures there's no chance in hell any of the readers has heard of the original, let alone seen it! Normally, I'd just ignore this kind of crap, but once I'd finished the review I was pretty ticked off. Sure, it's not Takashi Miike's best film of all time, but it really doesn't deserve some ignorant critic turning off potential viewers, solely because the guy's a lazy asshole!
