James Frey Controversy

I read A Million Little Pieces not long ago and I loved it. It was raw and definetly worth the read. All the controversy over James Frey's book is a bunch of bitter driven nonsense. Whether he embellished the story or not, he still wrote a damn good story. It took a lot of courage for James Frey to write what he did and I applaud him. The language is harsh and crude and I like that. Get off of his back. Not one of us is NOT guilty of embellishing a story at some point during our lives. Next time your telling a story to your friends remember how you tell it, and then remember how it really happened. Not one of us hasn't told a tall tale to make an incident more appealing or enticing to the listener. Before you point the finger and cry 'heretic' look at yourselves. It's bullshit, the flack James Frey has taken over the past month. Research, ALMOST any self proclaimed autobiography and I guarantee there will be instances that can be discredited or stretches of fiction that never really happened. Look at the movies too. So called movies based on true stories are complete and utter horseshit. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre comes to mind. That movie doesn't have an once of truth to it. It is simply based on the twisted mind of Wisconsin farmer Ed Gein back in the day. So, let's stop the witch hunt. And to hell with all of you judgemental critics claiming to be so self righteous. Seriously, next time you tell a story tell it how it actually happened without any fabrications and see how many people stick around to listen. Now I'm not saying ALL people embellish thier stories. I'm sure there are lots of great books based squarely on the truth as it happened. And to those people I can tell you that I've probably NEVER read your book because it's probably boring as hell. James Frey poured out his heart and soul. Truthful or not, putting pen to pad is hard enough as it is, and some folks are burning him at the stake. In what way does it affect our lives that he bent the truth a little? I am willing to bet that there is more truth behind his book than fiction. So why don't some of you get off your high horse. And if your gonna cast the first stone you might want to take a look at your own credibility. All you clowns are just jelaous and bloodthirsty because his book was critical success and yours probably flopped. If you do happen to be one of those folks that tells it straight from the cats mouth then good for you, pat yourself on the back. We need writers like you, just as we need writers like James Frey. Granted, I'm not willing to admit I watch Oprah but I am glad she picked this book.

about Frey

I think the reason the controversy arose was that once Frey decided to publish the book as an autobiography it technically entered the "non-fiction" category. However, there are apparently long sections in the book, such as jail terms that Frey claims to have served, which never happened. So, there's fiction in what he agreed to print as a non-fiction book. That's where the controversy comes from. Either the book could have been classified as fiction or there could have been a disclaimer that it was not an entirely non-fictional autobiography. The problem that people are having with Frey is that he avoided both those steps.

Who the hell is james frey

that I should give a damn?

Should we give a damn?

Good question, i'v been wondering the same thing about that situation. And the answer, i think, is "maybe so."

Some interesting points have been brought up by this controversy. I didn't know that publishers did not fact check an individual's memoir before they publish it. That fact came out, i believe, on Oprah winfrey's recent interview with Frey and his publisher.

That's shocking. How many autibiographies/memiors have any of us read? I'v read a few, and i would have assumed that the publisher would have taken some steps to insure that the "autobiography" was at least not an outright lie.

James Frey?

Is this the guy Oprah ripped apart recently and called a liar?

Save a horse, ride a cowboy!!!

Its a LIE

Lets not quibble with the facts. He lied. Period. He had three months to fess up. The publishers asked him. Oprah asked him. Is this thing the truth? He said yes every time. The book sold 2 million copies, and he's making a bundle....off of a lie, with another book coming out soon...which they have discovered is also a lie. The publishers are reconsidering the contract now. Why would you want to hold the President and Congress accountable, your son's teacher accountable, business executives accountable, your doctor accountable, etc.....and let this joker slide? Is it because hes a writer...and you are a writer..and you like to meander with the truth too? I have a word for ...... fiction!

ok

I'm not gonna argue with you Nancy Drew. Obviously, I was unaware that you and James Frey are close friends, and you know every aspect of his life. I'm not gonna lie, you got a point, and his career and credibility are dead now. It was a bad call on his part and he's suffering the reprecussions. He made a mistake. I don't know why everyone is taking this as such a direct betrayal. There are far worse things in life. He still wrote a damn good book and that's what I was hinting at. But don't imply that I meander the truth, especially since I never claimed to be a writer of Memoirs. The day I am, I'll be sure to include a disclaimer. You don't know me, so don't take jabs at me, especially over something so trivial. The last thing I want is a blogging enemy. I respect your point of view and I'll even apologize for my sarcastic remarks up top. It's been fun Nancy J.
