Jaeger Threw Wimbledon 1983?

An interesting story came out saying that Andrea Jaeger actually "threw" the 1983 Wimbledon finals to Martina Navratilova, which ended up being th 3rd of her 9 championships.
I remember watching this, at the time, young phenom of 18, who was going though everyone else and suddenly, when she's up against Martina in the finals, gets crushed 6-0 6-3. However, reading about her throwing the championship seems freaky at best. I don't think Martina would have lost to her anyway, seeing as how Martina pretty much dominated her in other circumstances, but it does get us thinking about tennis and other sports and whether sometimes athletes quit for their own reasons.
She makes it clear that no one told her to give up; she did it all on her own because of two reasons. One, she was mad at her father; two, in her distress she went to Martina's place, of all things, and felt like she'd disturbed Martina's preparation for the finals, especially since Martina didn't talk to her, but her trainer, Nancy Lieberman, did. So, she says she didn't try, whiffed on shots on purpose, and generally didn't care, all to get back at her father and soothe her own psyche.
And why do we believe her? Because she's now a nun, a Dominican one at that, and what reason would she have to lie? It's still terrible, though, and I'm not sure who it serves to have her announce it now. But it's out there, so, there you go.

She became a Nun Catfish? Egads!

Well she had to clear her conscience after all...imagine the pseudo guilt trip she has been on!
Turns out, Sassys,...
that she always felt as though tennis was more of a selfish game, and though she used her wealth for others, she felt that wasn't enough, and so, well, there you go.
And maybe she had to clear her conscience, but at the same time, it had the possibility of making people take another look at Martina, if you know what I mean. I mean, look at the reaction Christie Brinkley's soon to be ex has received since owning up to having sex with the babysitter,... no wait, he's a scumbag. Never mind! lol

But I do believe that some things are better left un said like when someone else witnesses infidelity...should they tell the person that was cheated on? It's an age old question...in AA we have to make amends with the people we have hurt when we were drinking...but we draw a line when it comes to apologizing if it means the person who is receiving the apology will be further hurt. Sometimes what I don't know can't hurt me:D
Interesting statement, Sassys,...
remember the guy a few years ago who apologized to the woman for raping her, along with a bunch of other guys, something like 15 or 16 years earlier? I always had mixed feelings about that one because I wanted him and the others to get justice, yet I knew that he was a much different person than the 18 year old he'd been at the time, though he was troubled, and he had come forward with his admission and then got arrested, got other people arrested, and they went to jail. It's an odd case, to be sure.
You know what, though? I know that half the time I'd tell, with a caveat. If there's some possibility that I'm going to be involved on the back end, then I'll go to the person who caused the indiscretion and give them a deadline to tell the truth, otherwise I'll do it. I will not allow myself to become a "victim", so to speak, to someone else's lies and the like, and I'll call them out on it. Now, I may still have to deal with it later on (the consoling part), but at least it's dealing with the truth, and not a lie.
