i've had worse days, but damn...

James Champion's picture

so this is sort of embarrasing. not because of the events that took place today, but because of the result. the result being that i am still unemployed i think...you'll see.

so i was supposed to start a new job today as a loan officer. i chose to go in the direction of sales because of the earning potential. i moved from new jersey to cali a couple months ago. i now live in san diego, but not exactly. i live in la jolla (the jewel), which is a suburb. Although I arrived here in a car i did not drive and at the present time i dont own a car. so i needed to get to this job using public transportation. i call the sd commute customer service line and ask them what stop i need to get off at, where i need to go from there, what times do the bus leave, what times to they come back and how much it costs.

this lady proceeds to give me the right directions from the wrong place. she says get off at camino ruiz when i was really supposed to get off at camino santa fe. by the way i ask the bus driver about the street where the job is located and she doesn't even know what it is. ok so i get off at camino ruiz and i am walking around for like a half an hour. there are no people on the streets in this place. i cant even ask for directions. so i ask a couple people, a garbage man, but nobody knows shit. i'm thinking do yall live around here or what? so i see a mail lady and she has not heard of the street either, but i remembered there was a time warner located in the area. i know what you're thinking, but i didn't have the job number on me at the time or at least i didnt know i did.

she says you have to go to carroll road, but that it is extremely far away. i keep walking. my feet are starting to hurt at this point. i'm walking on back streets trying to get there ASAP. finally i call information and get the number to the place. i tell the receptionist that i got really lost. i'm not from around here. she says okay. she has has not even heard of camino ruiz, but if i get back to the main road that i should go to camino santa fe. this is when i realize the customer service lady fucked me over. i think i shoud sue. sounds silly and i always preface by saying i didn't go to law school that long. But i think i got a good case.

anyhow i go to the main road and stop at a mechanic to ask where santa fe was. he says its like a 20 minute walk. 3 lights, but a bus would be coming soon too. i walk to one light and the next light is not even visible so i wait for a bus. i catch and get to santa fe and walk to another 15 minutes to the place. i can feel 28 or so blisters developing on my feet at this point cuz im walking for an hour in dress shoes.

i get there and the receptionist says "we dont take late people." you believe the nerve of this bitch. i say i "called you earlier." "oh that was you." "yes." "let me call someone". ok fine. "she tells whomever that i got really lost and that i called earlier". she tells me to go in the room, "i think they're gonna let you in."

i go in the room and the guy administering the training looks at his watch. i say "im sorry im late, i got lost." he says "where did you come for an interview" (smart ass). i say "here". my interview was about a month ago, but the training is not done very often. at that time i did not drive and i am not from around here. i give him my spiel with all the details i gave you guys and i finish by saying "i would really appreciate if you would let me in the training session." he says sorry, "i dont have time for you." dickhead.

i understand i was late, but i called the bus co. i called the job and said i was lost and thus going to be late. now if you dont take late people then why would you not tell me that earlier. if you dont take late people why then would you allow me to come into the training session. who the fuck did the receptionist speak to before she sent me in there?

i am beside myself at this point. i dont put up a fight for fear of going off on this dude. i just walk out the room and go outside. i stop and stare for about 10 minutes because i am so mad and frustrated that i really dont know what to do. eventually i call anyone who will listen to me and you guys are next. what would have been a good excuse. my left leg was decapitated by a ninja on the way here. sorry im late but its hard to hop on one leg. he just jumped out from behind that bush. i never even saw it comin.

so i call the lady that i interviewed with and i give her my spiel. i am staying as calm and composed as possible. she said she would talk to the "CEO", but it's not likely he would let you come back because blah blah. whatever. she says she'll call me later and let me know. i'm no idioit. the training is 2 weeks long. u mean to tell me i cant make up an hour. was the secret behind the da vinci code revealed in that first hour. i hope i still get the job cuz i desperately need the money, but fuck these people man.

i hate insert a racial component into the mix and i am not saying it os even a factor, but im gonna throw it out there cuz im pissed and i dont care. why do i go in the room and he takes one look at me and ready to send me home. once again if you dont take late people then why do i even make it in the building.

now i am home resting my bleeding bunyans and only watching PTI and unexpected conversation with my little sister can cheer me up. or alcohol.

will work for food

Well, I hope for the best ...

... but it sounds like this situation would have become a mutual antipathy society in short order anyway.

I have to ask: what would your football coach have done in a similar case?

what my football coach did do

i went to highschool in upstate ny. the weather can get pretty nasty. when i was a senior i got sick. i could not stay awake in class. i couldnt even really move, but i practiced a couple days outside in the freezing sleet and snow. not smart. not a good way to get better. consequently i got sick enough that i could not go to school, which is good. i needed to get better so i could play friday. well i didn't go to practice either. it was common for kids to not come to school because of sickness and still come to practice. i had a car. i could have gone, but my dad was not having that. my coaches knew how sick i was so there are similarities as far having what i think are valid excuses. long story short. long story long at this point, my defensive coach didn't start me. i was 1 of only 6 seniors on the team, a captain, and a first team all league cb and he still didn't start me. But he put me in after a few plays.

i could have accepted being on this guys shitlist because after a while my performance would have spoken for itself.

how does Eminem, a white rapper reach superstardom? how does Earl Boykins, a 5' 5" 155 pound guy, play well amongst the NBA's giants. because you cant deny a great preformance.

okay so a little update that help shed a little light on the situation for me. so my friend who i am staying with and who has lived out here actually looked at the site last nite to help me know where to go. i didnt remember what he said. just that it was camino something. turns out he told me camino ruiz also so is there a mislabling in the system...? im harping. i know.

maybe i should be upset about this whole immigration issue. if there were not such an abudance of mexicans located in cali then the streets would not be labled camino such and such because as americans we speak the opposite way. maybe this mix up does not happen if the street names do not share the same fist half of a name. now im really harping.

Most companies these days ...

... put overt emphasis on being on time, because in their view no workers can produce anything without being present (I must say that does seem logical). One company I used to work for, McLeod Corp. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had a firm policy. Late once, verbal warning. Late twice, written warning. Late a third time, termination. No excuses. No exceptions. Still, some people, no matter how talented they may be, lost their job by simply being late three times.
