It Was a No-Diaper Day!

Today my not-yet-three-year-old son went without diapers until bedtime! It took a huge leap of faith for me to dress him in those thick, absorbant undies and actually take him out in public, but it totally worked. He had no accidents, and successfully used the potty in Publix, after which he excitedly called his "Gram" to share the news.

I actually expected him to wear his diaper at naptime (he sometimes naps and sometimes doesn't, but he has to stay in his room for a while every day), but he had other plans. He stripped it off and slept naked in his recliner (one of the few upholstered pieces of furniture in my house - I was sweating it). I can't believe he didn't have an accident!

When I have more time I'll write about exactly how this came about, since traditional potty-training "sit on the potty at scheduled intervals" didn't work for him at all. I had to use my creative dog training skills (taught to me by my manipulative and lazy Whippet) to figure out how to reach this milestone with my son.

We actually had a banner day yesterday too when he successfully swam across my in-laws' small pool. My baby is growing up!

He wants to wear diapers outside of the house too...

And when he's had a rare mistake he's asked to wear a diaper so that it won't happen again. But I just told him Monday that we were going to go out with his underwear on (I bought some absorbant training underpants - they still allow pee to go through to his pants but they soak up some of it) and that he needed to tell me if he needed to pee pee because he had to go in the potty.

I have a portable potty seat that unfolds and sits on the big potty, and I brought that. As soon as we made it to Petco, where we were going just to look at the animals, I asked him if he needed to pee pee. He said yes, so we went in the potty there (it was about as clean as you would imagine it would be). He didn't have to go and didn't even want to try. Then we looked around, left, and went across the street to Publix. When we walked in I asked him if he needed to go and he said yes, so we went and this time he did go. He was so excited!

I broke out the candy reward I had brought, and he asked to call Gram, which I encouraged. She said she had a special reward for him at her house, so we went by and visited afterwards. All that special attention really helped, I think.

Basically, it just takes a huge leap of faith to do it. And extra clothes. Bring extra clothes.

Yeah, it is, and it will get

Yeah, it is, and it will get better. Trust me, I do know how frustrating it is, but like someone once told me- you don't see high schoolers running around in diapers, so it will happen. :D

That's true!

What's frustrating to me is that he did so well the first two days, but I don't think he felt well today (we both either have colds or very bothered allergies) and it really didn't help at all. We basically had pee and poop everywhere. Sigh.
