IT’S ALL IN THE TONE OF VOICE

spookyyank's picture

It’s a fact of life. We get across our meaning by way of tone more than the actual words we use. And, I’m sure we’ve all noticed that sarcasm isn’t just for snobby art critics anymore. Even little kids can belt us across the face with a wallop of sarcasm that would leave even the biggest of cynics looking like newbies! Hell, those are my favorite kids!

Mothers have also employed “the tone” for centuries! That tone unique to each, individual mother that heralds impending death. Most of us get a certain amount of pleasure from using it. I think it’s from having it used against us when we were young and then years later discovering of THE POWER. Of course, my little spawn of Satan isn’t affected by the tone. But, I have been amused to no end ~ to the point of disrupting the discipline with my out-loud laughter ~ the affect her surrogate grandma has been having! Oh the power of grandma! One look to defeat the giant! HA! Take THAT! Am I upset to be upstaged??? Hell no! He-he (whisper).....I’m not the bad guy anymore! Plus, it’s just too funny to see my kid actually afraid of someone! I love grandma.

It’s becoming a trademark of the intelligent and informed. It’s also becoming the trademark of the popular blogger. And, what always impresses me. I think we all forget how difficult it is to convey tone of voice through written words. The feedback to my thoughts is genuinely the biggest reason for my blogging, but I also post my every thought in order to keep sharp. When writing a screenplay it’s pretty damn simple and no-brainy. Example:

The dumb blonde, actress enters the room. With the confidence of a NFL linebacker, she rushes the bar.
Dumb Blonde
Can I have whatever that producer guy over there is having?
Bartender
(smirking with disgust)
You mean the geriatric with the Metamucil?
Dumb Blonde
(oblivious)
Ooooohhh, that sounds good!

See, not much finessing is needed. It’s all spelled out for even the simplest of producers to understand. Which, for the individual who writes because they were pretty much born unable to do anything else, writing a screenplay is fun, yet lacks the stimulus we need like caffeine or heroin. My joke that’s not a joke forever has been ~ “I take breaks from writing by writing (blogs)”.

So, those who are reading this should stop and think about the posts you’ve made. Think about the tone of voice you used and ask yourself if the reader understood your meaning. If so, then take a moment to pat yourself on the back. Go shopping and buy that pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing. Decide that today is the day to break the diet for a moment of chocolate-caramely-ice-cream-goodness. Or, if it’s your thing, break out the girly magazines and for once, don’t claim to be reading the articles! You deserve it!

Ah, someday - maybe when I’m old - I’ll write that novel that I’ve always promised myself I’d write. I’ll labor over each word in the way that no lover has ever accomplished. My very existance will be devoted to the right prose and the most delicious of syntax. There will be melody and song. Love and sex. Maybe even some fucking. A little bit of Hemingway, a sprinkling of Proust, a dash of Dostoevsky. Until that shining, beautiful day; sitting on the veranda with Modelmom in her Tuscany paradise (let’s face it, when I begin my novel I’ll need someone around to harness my crazy and tie my shoes!) I’ll be here or where ever. Sharing my every thought and cooking up my next adventure. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

yo know what

I was formerly living in a world founded by sarcasm and cynicism, where people praised me for the dark humor and presence I offered the little society I was in. Now that I find myself out of it, all I can say is its pretty damn hard to make friends, I can say I really forgot how or rather I don't think I really know. Whether its just pride or something I really need to know, so you must tell me whatever you think it is, any books that i could read or just something. My humour doesnt work for me right now, i have to keep my mouth shut most of the time and I know that doesn't do me any good.

When we leave the security of what we’ve always known it can feel like suddenly being on another planet. What’s important to remember is that we are the only one to make or break us! Are you shy? I don’t get that impression of you. I think making friends is like finding a boyfriend. Look for the qualities and values in people that mirror your own. No book could ever really tell you how to make friends, because we’re all such diferent people. Even the strangest seeming folks have friends they can relate to. And, with the situation I’m in right now I have been thinking of an old saying I still believe to be very true ~ “We are judged by the company we keep”. Go to a poetry reading or any gathering where the things you love are being showcased. I’ve met people in all sorts of situations and what’s made the meeting’s become friendships is being consistant. If you meet someone new and they give you a phone number - call it! Make plans to go out or hang out or whatever. If you don’t feel secure doing that, you could still give the vibe that your open to conversation when your out. It can be a bit scary, but if you’re out and notice someone else on their own, you could strike up a conversation out of the blue. I’ve done it many times and ended up having a nice chat. It all comes down to deciding not to be closed off.

Stalking Edgar

yeah you're right, I'm not at all shy though sometimes when I'm not in my usual I struggle whether I am or not. LOL. you're right about consistency too, I used to not worry about that, now Ill try to exert effort in that area.... I saw stalking Edgar on myspace, love you're humour and it made me laugh oh so silently.

Ah, Edgar!

Putting out the effort is always the hardest part! For so long I’ve not been consistent with people because I’m so easily distracted by things going on at home or work. It’s like I just forget about them! Then, I’ll see they’ve called and not be up to returning the call. It’s one of my biggest downfalls. When I do finally call or meet them out, I’ll wonder why I hesitated!
Thanks for stopping by the site and I’m glad you enjoyed my ramblings. I often wonder how many people read the details on those things, so this is the first time I’ve made more than a half-hearted effort. Add me as a friend if you like. As time goes on I’ll be more active with it than I have been lately.

tone of voice

Lack of tone of voice and body language are what make emails and forum posts so easy to misread. I've become rather disliked by some on my fave forum for just this reason. They don't know me as a person and don't know that I would never intentionally hurt someone's feelings, not as a joke or otherwise.

Essentially, I'm a writer and yet I've been screwed by the written word. Chatrooms be damned!

I’ve had that happen!

Someone miss reads what I’m saying and takes offense! Once, I was joking in a group chatroom and said to one - “Back off him! He’s mine!” She totally thought I was threatening her! It was so awkward and embarrassing! But, that is a lot of the reason I wrote the post. Most of the time that doesn’t happen anymore. Bloggers have gotten so good at writing with “body language”! It’s a tough skill to learn, as we all know! So, we should be proud of ourselves!

I love to write with sarcasim

but dont know if I am conveying it as such. I try to write how I feel and say it in words as if I were actually speaking it. Especially writing in humorous sarcasim, and I always get a kick out of some of the posts and comments that have this. It's as if your right here with me and I will just burst out laughing.

spookyyank's picture

That’s the way

to do it! Write as though you are speaking. It’s the biggest compliment I’ve been given about my screenplays ~ that the characters speak like real people. And, when we find our voice, it comes through in the writing. Even the times it’s spelled out are funny. Modelmom did that recently when she wrote something like ~ “Motherhood is such joy (oopps, sarcasm)”
And, yours DOES come through!
