Israel, Iran & The Nuclear Threat

Iran | Israel | middle east | nuclear threat | nuclear weapons | war

By now many of us have heard that Israel conducted a massive round of war "games", basically flexing their military muscle by showing that, at any time, they could launch a strike into Iran and take out the nuclear facility that Iran is trying to convince the world is only for them to have more power.

Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency, said that an attack on Iran by anyone would result in the Middle East becoming a fireball, and would render him and the United Nation's agency that monitors nuclear action useless. His direct quote was: "It will make the Middle East turn into a ball of fire. It is a lot worse than having sanctions. A military strike will lead Iran, even if it plans today to manufacture a nuclear weapon, to establish a crash course to speed the process to have the weapon with the blessing of all Iranians, even those living in the West."

I feel like I'm missing some things. One, don't most of us consider the Middle East a powder keg already? I mean, when predictions come up as to where WW III could possibly crop up, isn't this the region most of us believe is the most likely? Two, with all the rumors that have been flying around in the past 5 years at least, who here doesn't think that the crash course on making some sort of nuclear, or at least atomic weapon, hasn't already taken place? There's missing uranium all over the place, and just this week there was news that there's proof that arms dealers have pretty much delivered most of what a terrorist group would need to build one of these bombs; luckily, delivery is always the most difficult option these guys would have, but still,...

How likely is Israel to do a bombing strafe of Iran? They've done it before in Syria, and I have no real doubts they'd do it to Iran, especially since the present president of Iran has stated that he'd love nothing better than to wipe Israel off the map. That kind of talk from the leader of any country doesnt' usually produce warm and fuzzy feelings. And, as we all know, if Israel does this, and any kind of war breaks out, the U.S. is pretty much obligated to go in on the side of Israel, and with our forces already spread thin by fighting and "protecting" in two countries already, who would be left to fight alongside Israel?

Man, Teddy Roosevelt may have been right when he was trying to keep the United States in an isolationist stance back a century ago. America is going to get dragged into something, whether it's something that needs to happen or not, and it's not going to be pretty. Obama or McCain better be ready to do something more than just talk about it when it happens.

This scare tactic is not new...Now how the world reacts to it is another story...McCain would use it as an excuse to "prove" his war mongering case and Obama would be wise to do the exact opposite...there are many other ways to support Isreal without being involved in a war. Hopefully McCain wont be the person in charge of any major decisions, especially if they include war. Being at war in Iraq for 100 years is NOT an option, and neither is going to war with Iran.

Going to war, Sassys,...

in support of Israel because they attacked someone wouldn't ever be in our best interests, for sure. However, a nuclear weapon owning Iran is definitely not in our, or anyone else's, interests for that matter. Truthfully, I hope Israel launches its missiles and allows the U.S. to condemn from afar, all the while smiling because we couldn't do it ourselves.

Still, you're right, these U.N. people seem to flip flop on whether something is bad or good, with no real consistency, and I'm starting to wonder if there's any real use for them either.
