Is this fair?

The company I work for recently fired 8 people. They got fired for accumulating 8 points in 6 months or less. Points are a consequence of calling out sick or being late (having a normal life where stuff happens, in other words).

Some of these people have worked there for over a year, and had done everything they could to help the company (including working A TON of overtime). Some of these people were my friends.

I don't like the points system. I don't like having to worry about losing my job if I get sick. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think this is fair at all.

Fair

No, it doesn't sound fair, but unfortunately they can do it. Are they upfront about this policy when they hire people? If they aren't that is definitely shady. A lot of things about corporate America aren't really fair, but companies can make their policies as strict as they like. I saw my company let a good loyal employee go so the publisher could give his daughter her job. That too was unfair.

The company does make us sign something upon employment, basically stating we are aware of their point system. But it is an unspoken agreement among the employees that the rule sucks. No wonder turnover is so high.

Are you a union shop?

It was precisely employee abuses like this, during the Industrial Revolution and later, that spawned and supported the union movement. Evidently we have to learn the lesson again. Perhaps this time in a way that doesn't pit the corruption of employers versus the corruption of union leaders, with the employees (as usual) the losers.

It doesn't sound fair.

However, employers do need to have some rights. Not all empoyees do the right thing, as not all employers do the right thing. Sound like a need for reform somehow.
