Is Saudi Arabia A Backwards Country?

rape | Saudi Arabia | women's rights

I've always hated that the United States has this odd affiliation with Saudi Arabia. I don't usually mind some of the rules and laws that other countries have, but in this particular case I've always had an exception.

Back in 1991, Saudi Arabia asked the U.S. for protection from their fears of Saddam Hussein. However, they asked for that protection with conditions against women soldiers of our military. And we acquiesced at the time; I thought that was a travesty.

Yet, that was nothing compared to what's going on now. I can't believe this backwards country (yeah, I'm calling it that) is actually punishing a woman who was raped by 7 men because, in their opinion, she shouldn't have put herself into that position to begin with, based on Muslim law. And, of all things, her punishment increased at the same time that the punishment for the men was increased. Just what the heck is that all about?

I've got to say this; if this is what Islam is all about then it's certainly nothing I would ever be interested in. And, can someone tell me just what would compel women to want to stick with this type of religion, one that subjugates them more than they get subjugated to begin with in general society?

Maybe this isn't a fair question to ask, since I'm not religious, but just what is it that allows many women to allow themselves to be treated as second class citizens when it comes to religion? I mean, obviously it's not just Islam that gives men a "good" reason to dismiss women, or put women down, or make women live up to standards that men don't have to live up to. And, at least it seems, women allow it to happen.

Yeah, I know, I'm not a woman, but that's even scarier because, obviously, this means it's not really my fight. I pretty much know what Sassys and PW are going to say on this one; what about the rest of you?

You touched on everything...

I would want to say. Just how can they have such a low opinion of women? How can their religion condone and support such opinion.? If you get into a discussion they would deny they have such an opinion and blame the west. Were you at Writing Up - I got into some real debates over Islam. I was accused of hate speech because I dared to dispute a point or two.

I was, Hutts,...

but never got into any of those discussions over there because it seemed counter productive. The thing is, there are ways to bring this type of thing up, and then it all comes down to interpretation.

Frankly, my gripe here is against Saudi Arabia and the overall treatment of women due to religion. If someone wants to accuse me of hate speech against Saudi Arabia, frankly I don't care, because I think the government of Saudi Arabia is filled with a bunch of money grubbing phonies, and if the price of gas keeps going up while these fat cats keep building palaces, then they deserve to get slammed. Their treatment is women just helps to fuel the fire. Other countries want to gripe about the U.S.; man, this one isn't even a close debate.

Now they're looking to possibly back off,...

which is about time, but I'll only believe it when I see it. This weasel, Prince Saud al-Faisal, said that their courts will be reviewing the sentence this poor woman was given.

However, in the same breath, he said "What is outraging about this case is that it is being used against the Saudi government and people."

Duh! It's happening in Saudi Arabia, and it's your stupid laws! We're definitely against the Saudi government, as we should be, and obviously it's not only the United States which is giving them grief. The Saudi people,... well, we always know that what our own government might do isn't indicative of how the rest of us feel, so I'm not blaming the Saudi people, especially since they don't have the luxury of electing their officials.

Saudi Arabia needs to come into the 21st century in its attitudes towards women, and it's belief that men can get away with almost anything. Until that happens, they'll deserve our derision.

You said it, Catfish. In Saudi-Arabia

women aren't allowed to drive a car and don't even have the vote. How enlightened is that. Yet you never hear Western leftoids or feminists stick up for women rights in Arabic cultures. Perhaps those women don't deserve the same basic rights as women in the West?
In the koran it says that a woman is one-fourth worth the value of a man and also that it's okay for a man to hit his wife but only if she's disobedient. Nice..

She Got Pardoned

It was just announced that this poor woman got a pardon after all this mess. Seems that international pressure can work after all. It shouldn't have ever had to get to this point in the first place.

These people don't seem to want to lift

themselves out of the dark ages.

Actually James,...

it seems they want it both ways. They want to retain all their weird laws to subjugate everyone else, but for them, because they have money, they want to be able to do whatever they want to with it, and they do. Something about having so much money that makes people feel religion is for everyone else but them; we see it here in America also.

Well Catfish, seeing as you KNOW what I have to say

Sassys

I shall say nothing at all.

Yeah Sassys,...

I know, and I understand. LOL
