Is It Time To Bash The Patch?

SharonHH's picture

Many people have mixed feelings about birth control. I've always been in favour of it myself, though I've always been worried by the possible side effects. A web release from Parker and Waichman about the Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch confirms I was right to be worried. The release tells of a 33 year old woman who is filing suit against the makers of the patch following a diagnosis of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. Ouch!

It is reported that women using the patch are getting MUCH more estrogen than they need, increasing the risk of these diseases. More than 4 million women have used the patch since its FDA approval in 2001 and it's still on sale. If I were taking it, I'd be worried, wouldn't you?

The patch and the pill are both dangerous

When I was 21 years old (a few years ago) I had a pulmonary embolism (blood clot) from going on the pill. I almost died. Women think that blood clots only happen to other people, but these "side effects" are not as rare as we are led to believe.

Dreams Matter.

Scary stuff!

I'm not into hormonal birth control any more. I was on the pill for a zillion years, and when I got off to get pregnant the first time I couldn't believe how much better I felt. Much less depression, just overall, life got a lot more fun. I'll never do that again.

Pchan33 - so glad you are now ok!
