Is It Possible To Commit Just One Sexual Offense?

civil liberty | sex offender | victim

Everywhere, in the papers, blogs, magazines, and on the television, the forward charge is to restrict, manage, control, and generally prevent sex offenders from perpetrating their perversities upon the innocent children. A laudable and reasonable mission. Some will go so far as to demand castration, if not death, to the rapist, child molester, exhibitionist, froterrist, or voyeur. Again, we must keep the children and any other potential victim safe!

Of course.

Sex offenses have become such a hot item, such a vogue, that it may be that the fervor of dealing with the issue is clouding reason. Am I naive? Perhaps.

I'm just not certain that it's appropriate to treat a young 20y/o man(?) who had "consensual" sex with a 15y/o girl the same as society wants (and should) treat a serial predator of children or women. The crimes do not seem similar, yet there is no room for recovery. Once a sex offender, always a sex offender. So, both the 20y/o (who is ignorant of the laws and true definition of consent) and the predator recieve similar treatment by society.

I wonder if civil liberties are being violated. I anticipate responses to this post proclaiming "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE VICTIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Of course. The vicitm is paramount. That, though, really does not speak to what I'm referring to. In fact, that myopic response only supports my notion.

Sex Offenders

Of course every case and offender is different along with different circumstances. But how do we weed out ignorance from the repeat offenders? How do we determine who may or may not repeat the offense?

Bottom Line? It's a Crap Shoot

Good question, Ivy. Assess them for a year. Provide them with certain relapse prevention information. Probation. To name a few.

As with all crimes, though, it's a crap shoot til the perpetrator is back out on his or her own. Kind of dangerous, eh?

Gambling With Our Children

You are correct in it would be a gamble! I see where you are going with this. I feel a judge would consider the difference between a pedifile or just a horny 20 year old who didn't use his best judgement. Punishments should fit the crime.

Here is were I am stuck. A pedifile suffers from mental illness that has to be treated. They require life long treatment and cannot be trusted with a child. Now being that it is a mental illness casteration would not matter. That would not stop his or her desire to be with children and they can use their fingers and objects to penetrate a victim.

I know of a repeat offender who was given medication so that he could not form an erection. It worked for maybe a year and he found ways to continue to molest small girls. He even pulled the skin back to make his penis appear erect and rub the girls genitals raw.
This person needs to spend his life in a jail or mental facility.

As for a rapist, most rapist rape again as well. It is not about sex, it is about power and control. The desire is not for sex but for dominating and hurting another person. We can medicate and try to re-program these people, but there always the chance, a chance I would be affraid to take.

Murder less Dangerous that Molest?

Why aren't murderers as controlled and monitored as molesters? Are they less likely to re-offend? They are not always locked up for life, you know.

Sex Offenders...

Wonderful selection. I wrote a blog very similar in ways. Mine was about "Should Sex Offenders Be Allowed to Work in Schools?". The surprising thing is that the goverment seems to think that a sex offender will only be a sex offender on one occassion. If you read my blog you will see actual examples of ex-sex offenders being given jobs with children, the only catch is that there's restrictions. I suggest checking it out:

Just as you said, it is a crap shoot. And yes, each case is different, but who has to be the victim a second time to discover if this person has reformed?

Reformed Sex Offender?

I read your blog back then. I think I commented that "if they are 'reformed', then what's the problem? Somewhat satirical, calling the bullshit that someone knows if a sex offender is reformed.

Pretty risky stuff.
