Is Google preparing a desktop OS?

I've heard other people complain and I am a little concerned as well about how big Google is getting. It seems like everytime we turn around they're buying another company or developing new services. Well, it looks like they might be up to something new yet again.

Google has recently admitted to using Ubuntu Linux technology internally. The Register reported that the Google has been developing it's own Linux distribution using the Ubuntu OS. While the company has admitted that they use this Linux distro, they have declined to say what it's for and insist that it's only a internal system.

Rumors have started that Google might be preparing a desktop OS to compete with Windows. Could we be so lucky? The Microsoft Windows operating system has dominated in the PC software market with it's inferior products long enough, and a mainstream corporation like Google is likely to give a Linux distribution the thrust it needs to give Microsoft a run for its money.

I mean economists would say this is a textbook example of how competition drives prices down and consumers' benefits up.

Just think back to time when Ford was THE ONE in car marking, and how competition over the years had influence development of the automotive industry. We could jolly well still be driving the T-model today if not for the intense competition! So I welcome Google to take on Microsoft in their home turf!

I think the competition would be great. Personally, I don't like Microsoft products and only use them when I have to (like at work), but that wasn't the point. When Microsoft dominates the OS and software market, there is little incentive for them to improve their product. How much time has passed since the release of XP? Linux is a great alternative, but many of the distros are not yet user friendly enough to compete with Windows. Some of the commercial ones like Red Hat and SuSE (my preference) are almost there but not quite yet.

I also think that no matter what the industry, consumers should have choices, and Microsoft seems to do its best to crush any other options might be out there and make everyone dependent on them.

A man I just love to hate, and mind you, I don't hate very many people. I'd love to see him sweat over this but I don't think there's enough to go on here, at least not yet. I'm sure it's in the back of his mind though. Google competes with Microsoft on other fronts, like search engines (and there, Google is definitely king). If any company would be able to keep him up worrying about competition, it would definitely be Google.
