Is English still the official language of the US

Does anyone other than me and a few of my friends speak English in the US? I mean every time I am out somewhere I here Spanish or Portugeuse or French or who knows what being spoken. I feel like I live in a foreign country yet I am in my own back yard. Why can't people speak English in public? Speak whatever you want in the privacy of your own home. But speak English in public. That way I wont think you are always talking about me. And I won't have to write these bitchy blogs. Thanks

You're right

The whole bilingual thing has been forced down our throats by corporate America as a convenient way to accomodate the millions of slave laborers they are recruiting from Non-English speaking countries. As far as I'm concerned, if an immigrant can't prove English skills, back they should go to whereever they came from.

WOW. So much for land of the free!

Well there goes your 'free country' that you are always banging on about!! Does it really matter to you what language a complete stranger is speaking in the street?? No wonder there is so much prejudice in the world today with opinions like that! Ouch!

Go to the very large cities....

....and an enormous number of jobs require the ability to speak both English and Spanish....here in Chicago I've seen places where there are signs written in Spanish but NOT English. This mass importation of Mexican immigrant slave labor is the result of legislative changes that took place in 1993 that made it much easier to come to the U.S. for immigrants coming from around the world, particularly Mexico. Republican politicians pushed for this because they liked the idea of a larger supply of slave labor for the fast food restaurants and slaughterhouses they predominantly own. Democrats liked it because they saw the immigrants as more likely to vote for them once they had voting rights. The American people never asked for a mass importation of immigrants to occur, and if anything, this was done by corrupt politicians and corporations against the wishes of the American people. With this mass immigration has come the expectation that those of us born in America must learn Spanish to accomodate the new arrivals. So to oppose this "nonEnglishization" of the U.S. is not inherently racist or xenophobic....it is to oppose corrupt politicians and corporations who are only interested in workers willing to work for minimum wage or less.

Why can't people speak they're own language?

To me it sounds like wanting to make English the only language and viewing English as the superior language. This is the fault in America I believe. We act like we're the best country, with the best people but we're not.

The new arrivals are probably learning to speak english as well. They're struggling day to day and probably feel alienated and shameful. Why not support them? Why not help and offer a hand?
Why make it harder for them?

So true

can you imagine getting a job in another country and not speaking their language? It wouldn't happen. Speak any language you want, but don't get irritated at me when I don't understand what you're saying. That goes for all professions from doctors to cashiers. I don't have anything against people from other countries...but the worst thing is when THEY get mad at YOU because YOU don't understand THEM.

What...are we supposed to learn every language??

Newsflash- English is NOT

Newsflash- English is NOT the official language of the US. We don't have an official language. So no, English isn't STILL the official language of the US. But apparently arrogance is.

Please, for the love of all things holy, if you're going to take such a fascist view, at least have some clue what you're talking about.

Absolutely Right

Intricate girl is absolutely right. We should just let everybody speak whatever language they want. While we're at it, why don't we let everybody practice any belief that they want? There are beliefs that women shouldn't speak in public...and beliefs that women should get stoned if they commit adultery...and beliefs that killing is okay if done for certain supernatural beings...and beliefs that women are only one half or one third as important as men.

Seriously, there has to be some kind of order. If everybody is just allowed to do whatever whenever however they want, there's complete chaos...and that leads to the fall of societies.
