Iran's Mistreatment Of Women

Catfish's picture

Once again, in another country, the treatment of women has been profiled and shown in a negative light. This time, as figures in my mind, it's Iran, which recently arrested, beat, and interrogated a group of women, 31 to be exact, whose only crime was peacefully standing outside the Iranian Revolutionary Court in support of some of their fellow activists.

It's got to be tough being a woman in general, but never more so in the Muslim religion. If one thinks Christianity is unfair to women in general, and I happen to be one of those who thinks that, then they need to compare it to the way Islam treats women, as third class citizens (women are put behind male children).

Sure, there are many who are going to say they enjoy wearing burkas and the like, but the reality is that it wouldn't matter if they liked wearing them or not, because they're going to be worn, or else they're going to be beaten, and in some cases, killed.

And so it goes for women worldwide.

Catfish right on!

Sassys
It is also not just religion, but for instance, culture also plays a huge role...In the Hispanic community it is quite common to see women that are beaten and don't speak when there is a man in the room! I remember once in the Pre-Op area I was trying to get this Hispanic lady to tell me when the last meal the baby had was...she kept looking at her husband and he kept saying "she doesn't remember when" I realized immediately what was going on and the Doctor agreed with me to ask her husband to step out for a second (We sent him on some mundane errand) and then the woman told us all we needed to know!
They were Catholics...and yet the men rule. Tradition says that the role of a woman is ...I hate to say this...Barefoot in da kitchen!!

You're right, Sassys,...

and though I went off based on the story I read, it does occur outside of religion, and also outside of culture. Just over the last two days, for instance, on Dr. Phil, was this story of this really creepy guy who basically tracked his wife in as many ways as possible, including attaching a GPS unit to her car and seeing where she was going throughout the day over his computer. Talk about obsession; even faked having a vasectomy so he could get her pregnant to try to save the marriage; really creepy. Of course Dr. Phil put him in his place.

And I saw something else earlier this evening that made me look at my wife and say "Man, women really do have it harder than men sometimes, don't they?" Not that I didn't know it already, but when you see it; ouch.

Men can be dangerous

Good post Catfish. Not all men keep their behaviour under control the way you and me do. I'm in China now and am pleased to say that the Chinese people are not as bad as I feared they would be. Mao Tse Tung said 'Women hold up half the sky' and that has become a reminder to men here that women deserve respect. However, a friend tells me that in the new capitalist China women have less power than they used to have when she was a child in the Cultural Revoultion era (a horrible time in other ways). I note that bosses are almost always men. However, I have heard nothing of violence within relationships and if it were common I am sure I would have heard whispers.

I can't say the same for Western countries. Thank God we have Women's Shelters. We men have the physical strength but not the emotional strength. Too often men 'lose it' and beat their wives or use the greater economic power they often have to harm women in other ways. I was a welfare worker and counselor over 15 years and couldn't believe the situations I had to help in. Eventually I couldn't carry it any more and looked for other ways to make a living. It's great you are concerned. If you want to know more, call your local women's support group. They should welcome your interest, but if they seem a bit hard line and suspicious it's just because they have seen and experienced so much that they can be a bit against men in general.

If the value of each human being is equal to the value of the one you love why would you ever participate in killing by war or any other activity with deadly intent. http://bloggerparty.com/blog/xingtiao (general but centred on China) http://www.soulcast/xingtiao (thoughts on mind and spirit)

Good comment, xingtiao,...

and, if I may, I'd like to add that China has now hurt itself in its quest to have more men than women, since suddenly there is a major shortage of women for all these new "men" to date and hook up with. Now, that will easily drain the population, though, with over a billion people, it will take awhile to notice. :-)

By the way, my wife's main charity to donate items to is a local women's shelter, so, I suppose, we do our part.

Teaching your Grandma

Not that you are even my grandma metaphorically speaking but you knew it all already. Reflecting on what I wrote above I realized I was too much in positive mode. One of my intentions in blogging is to reflect on my own experiences and observations and what I said matches what I have seen in China. However, there is a lot of violence in the Chinese people, who are obsessed with Kung fu and see Tai Chi as a martial art. The beautifully choreographed movements are, in fact, a defensive movement system that can easily be transferred to an offensive mode. I sense a great air of tension in Wuhan, the city I live in, and a friend who gets out and about more than I do seems lately to be constantly coming across acts of violence as she rides her bicycle to and from work. I really should not conclude that just because none of that has been against a woman it doesn't happen. If someone can be standing slapping an old man in public with no one trying to intervene it seems likely that the individual doing the slapping would fit the profile of a person who would be violent to women too. Chinese people are even less likely than urban Westerners to get involved.

I live in an apartment and the walls are not soundproof and the windows are usually open and people here don't se any need to restrain their voices so I guess I would have heard something after a year and a half if physical DV was taking place in my block. I've heard nothing.

China is a big place and different places no doubt have different character. There are some terrible things going on. Kidnapping and selling of women happens in some provinces where the shortage of women you referred to makes this a profitable business. (The same with babies in some parts.) I even heard that some of these women are hamstrung by their husbands to prevent them from running away. Farmers wanting an heir are the chief buyers.

Congratulations on your awareness and concern. Men like us have to put our concern out there when we have the opportunity.

These are violent times,...

and China is breaking out of the type of isolationism that still exists for North Korea. So, as people see more, they start to realize that they're not getting theirs, so to speak, and that's when the violence starts.

And, when violence starts, often it's women who start bearing the brunt of a lot of it, just because, as bad as this sounds, it's convenient. Some societies turn their heads at violence towards women if it's a husband committing the violence. In some societies, it's actually encouraged for men to control their women, and more often than not, it's based on a religious philosophy. And it's one reason I don't trust religion at all.
