INXS "The One Thing"

Featuring the three Farriss brothers and led by lead singer Michael Hutchence, Australian export INXS became one of the most popular acts in the US (and the world) in the late '80s. For all of their success during that period - which included more than half a dozen Top Ten hits - INXS had a difficult time breaking onto American radio.

The band's first two albums weren't even issued in the US. However, their upbeat sound which blended synthesized New Wave and classic R&B and pop garnered enough attention with those releases to secure them a US record deal for their third album, 1983's Shabooh Shoobah. The driving song "The One Thing" was chosen at Shabooh Shoobah's first single and released to radio in April.

With a playful melody and some nifty saxophone, the song quickly became popular with listeners. The sex appeal of the charismatic Hutchence helped the video for "The One Thing" become popular with viewers of MTV and the momentum helped the song become INXS' US Top 40 debut. The song would only spend five weeks in the Top 40 and only climb to #30, but it served as an introduction to the band, paving the way for far greater success later in the decade.
