[InsertNameHere]Content.com Sites: Recommendations?

content | writers | writing

I once saw a cartoon on a magazine cover depicting an eagle standing on a map of the US, gingerly reaching out a foot and dipping a talon into the Atlantic. The caption: "The Reluctant Imperialist". Call me "The Reluctant Writer".

Yes I know I have a few posts on here. Stop laughing :). What you don't know is that I have a high threshhold of inertia. OK, I'll speak English. It takes a lot to get me started. Once the ball's rolling, look out. Eh?

So here's my hangup. I've heard a lot about content-posting websites here and elsewhere. But I find there's quite a few of them. Associated Content and Constant Content are two of many.

My question to you folks: is one better than another? Does it matter? Is it possible/advisable/legal to sign up for more than one of these?

If y'all could favor us with your experiences, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

Content Websites

I can only speak for myself, but hopefully I can shed some light on the subject or amuse someone with my attempt to do so.

I don't know if one of these sites is necessarily better than the other. I think it's more personal preference than anything else. Constant Content showcases articles in an effort to sell them to websites looking for content, whereas Associated Content pays upfront for articles then uses the content to attract visitors and clicks on Google ads (this sounds familiar).

I chose Associated Content because they pay upfront, and since I submitted the articles for non-exclusive rights, I made less money initially but can submit them elsewhere. I don't recommend it as a significant source of income, nor would I break my back to provide content for either site. But the articles I submitted will do more for me there than they will sitting buried on my hard drive.

Is it possible/advisable/legal to sign up for more than one of these?

That actually is a very good question. I'd see no problem with signing up for both, but submitting the same article both places at once, I'm not sure. I'd recommend reading the fine print and don't turn over exclusive rights to either of these sites.

I've done both

I'll admit to using both CC and AC, as well as WFC and a few other content sites. Like Gom Jabber said, I don't think anyone will make retirement money that way, but it's a nice way to keep yourself writing regularly and to get a few pennies coming in. I tend to submit older things that have just been lying around anyway, and so that makes it a bit more worthwhile. I haven't submitted to either place in months because other parts of my writing business (specifically grant writing and curriculum design) have been taking off and I just haven't had the time to do so. I check into both from time to time to make sure my accounts stay active, and I'm sure a dry spell will come again (probably soon!) when I'll have too much time on my hands, and back I'll go because a few dollars here or there is better than no dollars anywhere. We've got a kid in college and two more closing in on that stage, so every penny counts right now LOL!
