Halloween, October 31, 2007: my daughter’s 4th birthday. Well, this year won’t make up for last year’s birthday. I was still too new at the call center and couldn’t get the night off. So her birthday was quickly opening the gifts I got for her while she ate her tiny chocolate cake ~ all before I ran off for work. I didn’t even have time to make her a proper costume that year! Er, to wear to day care since I couldn’t take her trick or treating! Ya, kind of crappy. My only saving grace was that she was turning 3 that year and still didn’t have a handle on what birthdays are.
But, this year will be a bit better! I was at a complete loss for a costume! I’ve wanted to dress her up as the girl from ‘Night of the Living Dead’ but her hair is always too short! So, I went to Inquest of a Woman for help. Somehow I knew she’d come up with some really creative and interesting costume ideas. And, boy did she! Actually, all of her suggestions are worthy of doing. One, which we may do next year, is to plan a theme party of zoo animals. Considering how much my demon-seed is like a spider monkey, that would suit her well! But, the one that stuck with me the most was the suggestion that I ended up using. Once I had the idea and the mental image in my mind, it really was a done deal. As I had explained it to her, my lack of ideas stemmed from her birthday being forever tied to Halloween. Sure, I think it’s the coolest birthday ever! Think about it ~ she gets a party, cake & ice cream, trick or treating & candy, AND her birthday money! You just can’t get much better for a kid! But, it will become tiresome to always have parties that are, er, spooky themed. Hence my searching for outside help! I’m just hoping she’ll do better for her birthday money this year. A lot of people outside of Louisiana don’t know about the birthday tradition and therefore are cheap bastards who don’t pony up the kid’s dollar! Even when I explain what it is! Well, that’s THEY’RE bad luck on THEM!
So, we’ll only be doing the cake since there is just no proper place to have a real party. Everyone is broke, so I doubt she’ll do well in the gift department. My gift for her this year is a personal cd player and a custom-for-her cd of her favorite songs ~ largely the music from ‘Shaun of the Dead’, ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Click’.
BUT, she does have a rockin’ costume to wear trick or treating! Thanks to Inquest’s fertile imagination, she will be waltzing to many a house in the costume bellow!
My eternal thanks to her for this suggestion! Really, it’s her best Halloween/birthday costume to date! I wish the photo quality was better, but what isn’t obvious is the frosting is made of a light pink, the cake part is yellow and the frosting between the “layers” of the cake is pink and green (the same colors as the frosting trim). Up close it’s the coolest little costume! And, to top it off, the candle hat!
Now, my costume *sob* I wasn’t able to create this year. As we went through the craft store finding the pieces we’d need for Nella-bean’s, I felt pretty pitiful not having one for myself AGAIN. But, then thunder struck! I thought of the coolest costume of all time ~ I’d go as the blonde girl from ‘Hostel 2’!!!!!! I looked around for the exact-ish material to create the slutty corset they’d put her in for her torture scene while going over in my head exactly how I’d create the hand saw to be embedded in my face. It didn’t take long for me to realize two things, though. A: I couldn’t remember all the details of her whorish outfit. B: There was no way in Hell I’d have enough time to create the saw how I want it ~ which is to have a “working” blade that spits out fake blood. But, I have all year to put that together for next year!
Ah.........next year will ROCK!
