Independent Researchers

Does anyone out there do independent researching. I've been working for one company for a few months now and I'm interested in learning about other people and their experiences. No one ever knows what I'm talking about when I tlel them what I do. I do realize that a lot of companies prohibit you to go into detail but I'd like to know how other people like it and so on.
