In Defense of James Frey

I’m disgusted by the amount of people jumping on the James Frey “hater bandwagon. Granted he shouldn’t have lied and because of this his career and credibility are dead. There’s no disputing the fact that he lied. But there’s also no disputing the fact that he wrote a damn good book. Lies or not, you gotta admit it’s a page turner. Oprah lashed out at James Frey and retracted her ‘backing’ of the book, which I understand. She has a reputation and a million dollar business to look after. I am also aware that James Frey has made a bundle from “A Million Little Pieces, so why pity him? I’m on his side because a lot of other folks aren’t. I know in this country we like to see the top dog fall on his face. We get guilty pleasures of seeing other people’s misfortunes. That is why we all secretly want to see the stunt man miss the mat. That’s why we slow down when there’s an accident. That’s why there are not enough heart lifting stories on the news. That’s why there’s the website ogrish.com. If you’ve never been to ogrish.com, it’s a reality check and dark slice of life. It is not for those with weak stomachs. My own personal guilty pleasure would be to see Kevin Federline get all his hair hacked off by a weed eater, but that’s just me. Anyway, this William Bastone guy, editor for the “Smoking Gun irritates the hell out of me. He sits there with this smug look on his face like he’s got a constant erection. He did his homework, good for him, but other than that I don’t care to see his stupid face on every TV show as of late. And that Maureen Dowd harlot, she’s worse. What do you expect from the author of “Are Men Necessary? She too should just fist her mouth and quit yapping her trap. We have all these panels now, discrediting Frey and blabbering about how swell their Memoirs are. In all honesty, their Memoirs don’t sound appealing to me and they probably never will. I’d probably rather watch paint dry than stick my face in one of their books. If I wanted to see someone rant and rave and plug their own books, I’d watch an episode of Dr. Phil. What I’m saying is that Frey should be rightfully criticized, but at what cost? He’s a millionaire, and I’m jealous as hell, but what I’m saying his that his book is still a good book. About a month ago a lot of other folks thought so too. Should we kick a man when he’s down? I’m sure he’s learned a very harsh lesson. Never cross Oprah and maybe next time put a disclaimer in his book. In all fairness at first he did submit his book to publishers as a novel, lest we forget. But now I’m betting he’s contemplating why he even wrote the book at all. His reputation is tarnished and once that’s done all the money in the world can’t fix that. My point is that his book of drug addiction made me realize how shitty my life could be. That’s the bottom line. There are things far worse that others have gone through. Lie or not, there are things far worse. Hell, I bitch and moan when I got coffee grains in my coffee cup. I’m not saying he should have lied and shame on him for doing so, but Bill Clinton lied to our faces about Monica Lewinsky and he didn’t catch this much guff. His book is about redemption and he’s gonna have to redeem himself once again. He deceived us all, but in doing so wrote a damn good book. You can’t discredit that. But you cannot discredit that he brought this all upon himself, and that’s something he’s going to have to live with.

Why Quibble with Lying?

If the gas company promises to deliver you 100 gallons of gas and you pay, only to find out too late that it is half water, you will be upset. Especially if they say that they were afraid you wouldn't have bought their gas if you knew it was half water. If your future mate promises you that she hasn't been with anyone else, and you find out later that yes, there were those other 3 guys, you will be upset, especially when she says that she was afraid that you wouldn't love her if you had known.

Two million people would not have bought Frey's book if they had known it was fiction....because he SAID it was true. He not only lied, he took a ton of money based on that lie. The thing most sadly lacking in our modern world is a solid value system. Right is right. Wrong is wrong. Stop quibbling with it.

Why quibble with lying

Beautiful! But who will set the value system? The man with Gold which he earned with fake values!

That is why, my friend~

I've always preached, to trust no one, and look out for yourself. People are always going to lie. That doesn't mean you have to trust them. That doesn't mean you have to accept it~ That just means, you don't hand over your wallet and say, "Here, watch this for me, will ya?"

Look at your phone bill and see if you can justify every little extra charge at the bottom~ 30 cents here, a buck 20 there~ lying is a character trait. It's just hidden in different forms, whether it's one form, or one corporation. Deception~ it's all a game that sometimes, you just don't feel like playing.
