I'm electric

I suffer from static electricity overload. I made that phrase up by the way. Seriously though, in winter I shock everyone. And I'm afraid to wear my fluffly robe because I've seen sparks come off the walls when I touch the light switches while wearing it.

I've done some research on this and found claims that suggest wearing copper bracelets to help absorb the extra static. So of course I ordered one and not surprisingly it's way too big and won't mold to my little wrist. So I sent it back. Now the search is on for the perfect copper bracelet.

Copper is the only jewelry you will actually WANT to leave a green mark on your skin. That's a sign that your skin is absorbing some of the benefits. Atleast that's what one of the websites selling the bracelets said. I could be wrong.

I'm not sure there's anything special about copper over other metals in helping to eliminate that shocking feeling. I would have thought that any of the standard jewelry metals work just as well.

As for the green stuff, I didn't find any scientific studies that either credited or falsified the claimed health benefits of wearing copper. Copper is an essential element, but the copper that comes off the bracelet is mostly copper oxide, of which the body doesn't absorb much. Even when it's in a vitamin/mineral supplement. Just like you can't get the dietary iron you need from rusty cans. So if anything, the bracelets may be false security.

I did discover that people can get green skin scabs (technically, keratoses), and blondes can get green hair, from swimming in pools that have too much copper in them. Not the best strategy for St. Paddy's Day, even if it is next month.

thanks for the info. I kind of figured that is was mostly hype, but false hope is good enough for me :)
