Icicle Works "Whisper To A Scream"

Icicle Works was one of a number of bands to emerge from Liverpool during the early '80s and find success. Led by singer/guitarist Ian McNabb, they would continue releasing albums into the '90s, there one and only hit in the States would come with the song "Whisper To A Scream (Birds Fly)" in 1984.

McNabb had formed the band in 1980 and, two years later, Icicle Works released their debut single. It was successful enough in the UK to secure the band a release in the US. In early 1984, Icicle Works was issued as the band's self-titled debut album. Culled from the album as a single was "Whisper To A Scream (Birds Fly)."

With propulsive drumming and an insistent, dramatic vocal from McNabb, the song became a favorite on fledgling music video outlets including MTV. In late May, "Whisper To A Scream," despite failing to become a major hit in the UK, reached the US Top 40. It would only spend a month in the Top 40, holding at #37 for two weeks, but it would be a staple on numerous '80s compilations over the next two decades.
