I Think I Am Going To Try My Hand At Writing A Biography

advice | biography | mom | research | writing

Well, now that the new year has officially begun, I have tried to come up with a new project for myself. As if I dont have enough small projects around my house that I really need to finish, I am now going to dive into a major, (at least to me it's major) project of writing a biography of my mother's life.

I had thrown this idea around for a few years now, but I just really didn't know if I could actually pull it off. I figure how will I know if I can pull it off if I dont try.

For those of you that know me well, or are a family member, you know my mom is a jazz and blues singer in Kansas City. She has been doing this as long as I can remember, which for me would be since I was at least four years old.

There is so much more to her story than just getting up in front of all the people that come out to see her and the longest running jazz and blues jam in KC history. Most dont know she has been singing since she was 13 and was doing performances in USO shows in Germany when my grandfather was stationed over there.

So, I guess I need to gather alot of information and begin this project which will take who knows how long to put together. I feel I owe her this for the consistancy she has shown in her career, local as it may be, she has always loved what she does, as well as the people who come out to see her, or any musician. Her heart has always been it this business.

So wish me well, and if you have any advice for me, it would be greatly appreciated, I am all ears.

Sounds Interesting

Your mon has an intersting profession as musician. I bet she has tons of stories. I started to outline the book that I'm going to start working on this year. I've been a short story writer so this is a large step for me. I'm reading, "This Year You Write Your Novel" by Walter Mosely. The toughest thing about writing is writing or getting yourself to do it everyday-or often. Good luck with it biographies are alwys a great read.

Yeah--this is definately a bigger

project than I usually take on. I have always wanted to do this, but have put it off, and for some reason, I want to just dive into it now. I have also written a children's book and need to check into getting it published without all the expense. I too love to read bios, so I thought writing one would be neat.

I am excited about getting started. Not sure how long I expect this to take. Thanks for the support.

sounds awsome, ammorton!

That sounds like a really great project! And, it will be tough, but if you keep organized you'll pull it off easily! That I'm totally sure of! It also sounds like a wonderful way to really get to know your mom and all the things that - we as the kids - never end up hearing about. You could start interviewing everyone she sang with and the club owners of past and present. Even the fans who've come out to see her through the years. It really sounds wonderful and I wish you well! Let me know if I can help out in any way. I'm pretty good at giving "editor's" notes. LOL

Thanks so much Spooky

I will definitely call upon your expertise for this I am sure. There is probably quite a lot that I don't know about because we were so little when she started doing gigs on a regular basis. The sad thing for me is there is a little guilt involved when it comes to the fact that I didn't make more of an effort to go and see her play as much as I wanted to. Having kids at 20, 21, and 23 I was really tied down to them. I don't drink, so I have never really been a bar kind of person. I also lived in Kansas and she has always been in Missouri(Kansas City). I am ready to get started though, so onward march!

exactly, ammorton

And you're in a really good position to learn so much about your mom that you never knew. So, I predict this will be an exciting thing for you AND your kids! They know grandma is a great singer and a legend, but surely you'll uncover more of her legecy to inspire all of you!

Thanks Modelmom

my kids think it's a neat idea as well. My hubby has told me for awhile that it is something I should do. So I am going to do it.

Ammorton your mom must be so proud!

Sassys

She sounds like a great lady and she was so very blessed! To be able to spend ones life doing what one loves and to have a great family...good for her and good for you to...go for it, she did:)

thanks for all the support Sassys

I am excited to get started. I have contacted one of her old keyboard guys, who now lives in Nashville, about lending any information that he could and he is all for it.
So, just a matter of gathering all the information to work with, and I don't think I will have any problems with that. It's a big thing for me to take on, at least I think it is, but I am all for it.

Way to be, Ammorton,...

you have a goal in mind, and I hope you can get there. As for advice, I'm going to recommend that, when you're ready to go, purchase some voice recognition software to help you along. I used it when I wrote my first book. It doesn't work so easily when you're doing dialogue, and of course there will be mistakes, but just getting it all down to begin with is really the most important step, since you'd be reading and editing it on the back end anyway. At the time I used Via Voice, but now I have Dragon.

Reviews of Everything, reviews and opinions of, well, almost anything!

Thanks for the advice Catfish

I never thought of voice recognition software. I will need anything that will help along the way.

Homeschooling an Autistic Child

Trust me there are many challenges to homeschooling an Autistic child, but knowing that they are getting the education they need. Most important thing to me is her safety, I don't trust most schools now. In first grade my daughter was lost from her school. She was found and okay but the school had no idea she was even gone.

Take it one page at a time, Ammorton.

I love the way you write on your blog and I think you'll do a fabulous job with this biography. My one piece of advice, write naturally - don't go trying to put together a different 'voice' for your book. Then, have an experienced editor make all the punctuation and grammar fixes. That will, first of all, make the writing much easier and will also make it a much better read. I can't remember the name of the guy who said this but some very well respected, very largely published author once said, "I can't spell for shit but my editor can."

thanks for the advice PW

I think I will need some advice along the way. And I have noticed that you can get editors to do this as part of a publishing package. I sure plan on using one. I for one know that I am not great with sentence structure and some other aspects of editing, and that, to me, will make the writing process easier.
