I am not a racist person. I have absolutely no problems whatsoever with members of other races. I am, however, sick of the damn race card getting played. Why is it that every time something happens to an African-American, it is automatically labeled racism?
Yesterday, I was in a conference with parents about their son. They are an African-American family. The father was upset with me because he heard me say, "The only monkeys you are going to see today are when you look in the mirror." The father did not know who I was speaking to or even the context of the statement. He just assumed that because I was white and I used the word monkey that I was making a racist comment.
I understand that racism is a horrible thing. As a history teacher, the horrors of Jim Crow laws and segregation are well know. I do not think, however, that fact allows for such militant accusations of racism. Of course, I am white so I know nothing of being persecuted or maligned. Straight white men certainly never get passed over for anything.
