I Said, Gimme The Damn Chips!

Submitted by seanlovett on February 14, 2008 - 12:49pm.

I have an older sister and her and I used to fight like cats and dogs when we were growing up. However, something like this would have never crossed either one of our minds.

A 10 year old boy wanted the bag of chips that his 9 year old sister had. When she wouldn't give them to him, he retrieved his father's shotgun, loaded it, and shot his sister in the face.

One more time - He shot his sister in the face....over a bag of chips!

Obviously, there is something wrong with this child and he needs some serious help. But, I have some questions:

1. Where were their parents?
2. Why did the boy have such easy access to his father's shotgun?
3. Had the boy displayed any behavior in the past that would be an indicator (if paid attention to) that something like this could possibly happen?

I know the answer to the 3rd questions. It is yes. It was stated that the boy had pulled the shotgun on another person previously. So, I ask again, why did the boy have such easy access to the shotgun?

Luckily, his sister is expected to live. Hopefully, this situation will force this family to take a good look at themselves and see what they need to do differently to prevent this from ever happening again and to get this kid the help he so obviously needs.

Now, I don't know this family and am not trying to attack them. It is tragic what happened and, thankfully, no one died. But, given the circumstances surrounding the incident, it's pretty clear that somethings need to change, be done better, or simply just be addressed.

Here is a link to the video with more information on what happened.

I don't feel as diplomatic as you, Sean. The parents needs to be charge with endangering a child because they left that shotgun where the kid could get hold of it. We read so much of this stuff lately and it's not going to get better until we start holding parents accountable for keeping weapons away from their children.

But, Jeez! What a little brat! Shot her over a bag of chips? That kids needs some serious help.

Tis said that one can never eat JUST one after all! I do agree with PW here...those parents should be charged with child endangerment for starters! I kind of believe the "out of sight, out of mind" applies here...they didn't care enough to put up a rifle when they have kids! WTF?? I wish we could neuter and spay parents like these...that poor, poor little girl!

The parents need to be held accountable for leaving the gun within their son's reach. How awful for him to display such anger issues, especially at such a young age, but it seems even worse to me that the parents made it possible for him to do so! The kid is in obvious need of some major help before he actually does kill someone. His sister will need some serious counseling, too, to help her get through this. And their parents will have to live with the guilt for the rest of their lives that they made it possible for their son to hurt their daughter in such a horrible way!

It is very scary that this is how they react to situations, and not even blink an eye to it.
I mean, that was his sister....it means absolutely nothing when anger and rage take over.
Yes, I think the parents should be held somewhat accountable for the gun being in so accessable to a child.
That to me, for grown adults is what I call the "DUH" factor. I am glad she is going to be ok.
