I May Have to Bite Your Dog.....

ModelMom's picture

I am really starting hate dogs...or maybe it's their owners I detest. Don't get me wrong, I love animals, always have. I even so much as gave up meat and all animal by-products for a good part of my High School years.....but lately, the dogs on my block are getting out of hand.

And I am not talking about a poop problem here. The only time I've had to deal with that was when a totally trashed out couple was walking their enormous pit bull down the street last summer as my husband and I were working on the garden and they let their massive hound leave a steaming pile on our driveway...yes, it's true. The girl just giggled and said "oops!" then they walked away and we were left completely dumbfounded. I am not sure why we didn't call them back over to scoop up their canine's poop....we were either too flabbergasted or too worried that if we pissed them off they might key one of our cars, pop a tire, or find some other trashed out way to retaliate.

The reason I am really starting to resent my neighborhood dogs and thier owners is that they bark, incessantly, night and day. 24/7 I hear howling, growling, yipping and whining.....and I am not really sure why this is happening, since I don't remember it being this bad before. I do know that a few of the people on my street have acquired new dogs....maybe these are the ones that are riling the others up. Whatever, it sucks.

And it especially sucks since my son, who is just shy of 2 years old, keeps getting his naps disrupted by what could be the soundtrack for the new movie version of "The Hound of the Baskervilles". One of the new dogs on the block belongs to the woman who lives right next door and who ties up her pup in her front yard which is directly beneath my son's bedroom window. Thsi dog howls as if he were being gutted alive, it is a bone chilling sound and it goes on and on and on. I have attempted to talk to the owner, but she has somehow managed to elude me every time. I am ready to load up a pellet gun and go postal.

I firmly believe that if you are going to make the commitment of owning a dog, or any other animal at that, you should train them, take them to obedience school, whatever it takes, so that they don't do things like bark non stop around the clock. This can be done.....I have many friends and family members with well behaved dogs that aren't nuisances to the neighborhood. You don't just buy a dog and then toss out some water and kibble and leave it at that. It takes work to be a good pet owner, it is, after all, like being a parent of sorts. I just can't wrap my brain around people, in this case dog owners, who are so self absorbed that they can't see how theur animals' bad behaviour might affect those around them. People need to sleep, relax or just hear themselves think...and with the weather being warm, windows are left open, making the din even more unbearable. It is just not okay. And unfortunately, hearing this awful cacophony is really turning me off to ever buying a dog of my own.

It could be worse. They

IntricateGirl's picture

It could be worse. They could decide that they are doing everyone a favor and debark their dogs. Somehow people mistake this for responsibility. And on the off chance you don't know what debarking is- consider yourself lucky. It's sick. It's also enough to make you think that maybe the barking isn't so bad.

On the more pratical side, check into noise ordinances. They may be violating this by letting their dogs bark. Otherwise, find an overeager rescue group and place an anonymous call.

Good luck, and I'm sorry. I completely sympathize with you.

IntricateGirl – May 1, 2006 – 10:46am

Good idea....

ModelMom's picture

about the rescue group....I know some of these dogs are living in not so great conditions...being chained up in a front yard ALL day long just can't be good. I might bark my head off too if I had to live like that. And I am going to check into noise ordinances....thanks for that tip too! :-)

dogs

I agree! And you know what, I'm not ashamed to say it. I don't like dogs! I hate seeing them. I hate hearing them bark all the time. You hear it constantly here. I hate when people walk them in the park, with or without leashes. I probably wouldn't feel so strongly except I've been attacked by dogs SO MANY TIMES. People are so irresponsible with them.

I can't even go in the backyard half the time because the neighbors dog barks and growls at me. Grrrr.

Knot – May 1, 2006 – 11:15am

Knot...that sucks!

ModelMom's picture

Sorry you've been attacked by dogs! I can't even imagine! I swear I will be going completely Tony Soprano if any of my neighborhood dos ever so much as nip at my son or myself for that matter! I do like dogs, just not ones that aren't properly cared for. People's attitudes towards thier pets really infuriates me sometimes....you buy a dog, you take care of it dammit!
Oh and the unleased dogs at the park...yeah, I love it when the big ones come barreling at you and the owners dont even try to call them back! Not cool.

Just make sure if you break out the pellet gun...

...you're shooting the owners, not the dogs. The dogs aren't at fault here, at least not completely.

I'm a dog person. I train dogs, I compete with dogs, and I really like dogs. But they can be irritating when they aren't being taken care of properly.

I have an 11 year old dog who barks A LOT! I checked with my nearest neighbors and they said he never bothered them, so I didn't worry about it. Then a neighbor behind me let me know that the barking was bothering him, so I've made a concerted effort to get the dog inside as soon as the barking starts.

Yes, there is still some barking - you can't live in a neighborhood and not make noise, even if you don't have a dog. I can hear the kids one street over when they are outside playing. They are really loud. I'm sure the people who live right behind them can hear them in their house. But it's usually in the late afternoon, and you know what? Kids make noise.

Back in the day when my son let me sleep in, a neighbor's law service woke me up at 7:30 AM every Tuesday. And my garbage pick up comes every Wed. at 6:30 AM, and that wakes up EVERYONE. Noise happens, and it sucks.

Modelmom, you might want to get a white noise machine for your son's room, and you could certainly ask the owner of the dog tied beneath his window if they could at least tie the dog in another spot. I hate tied dogs, by the way. They are miserable and dangerous to others.

And to Knot, I'm sorry you've been attacked so many times. After more than 12 years of dog training and coming in contact with TONS of dogs, I've been nipped at once by a dog that wasn't mine. I've only been bitten when breaking up dog fights between my own dogs. I've never been attacked. You must have very bad luck!

Brenna re: dogs

ModelMom's picture

The sad part is that my son does havea white noise machine in hsi room, as do my husband and I and you can STILL hear the barking from the hound beneath our son's wondow. I think she gets tied there since the propery is unfenced and she is tied to the patio roof's post. I would definitely use the pellet gun on the owner! No worries there!
I know that noise is unavoidalbe but having it happen at all hours of the day and night is unnecessary. This is the first neighborhood I've lived in with this kind of noise pollution. (Although I must admit I'll take a dog barking over drunk college frat boys any day!) And I have a friend who is being trained by the "Dog Whisperer" who does wonderful things with dogs and has a beautiful & gentle training method. At the end of the day, the dog owners on my block just dont care about their dogs much less the rest of the people that live around them. It's a shame.

Oh & I meant to write this in my original post but forgot....without exaggeration, there are several times during the day and night that it sounds like we are in the middle of the animal shelter during feeding frenzy time. It is honestly that bad. And when I'm not irritated out of my mind, I do feel sorry for those animals. Not a happy existance for them judging by what I see & hear.

You really should talk to the owner

I really don't understand the people without fences who have dogs. But you should talk to her nicely about the dog being tied right next to the bedroom. Perhaps she could purchase a tie out stake so that the dog could be tied elsewhere. In fact, you could give one to her as a gift, because they aren't very expensive and maybe it would soften the blow.

If I didn't come across as sympathetic to your situation, I apologize. It is horrible when your neighborhood is loud for any reason. And the fact that one dog barks leads another dog to bark and so on. I would hate to live next to anyone who has their dogs kept out in the yard 24/7, because chances are they are going to bark a fair bit. Dogs are pack animals. They need their people.

Good Idea Brenna F.

ModelMom's picture

I think I may go to Petco and purchase one of those tie out stakes....andmaybe a longer leash. The poor dog next door is tied to the post with just a regular leash which doesnt give her much room to roam. My husband and I have joked about just putting up a fence in the middle of the night! LOL! And I didnt feel as if you werent being sympathetic....honestly, the barked was at quite the peak as I was typing my response, so I may have sounded irritated....but not at you! :-)

Canine Chorus

ModelMom's picture

LOL! Thansk for asking! And funny you should ask actually....I havent heard a peep from the neighbors dog in days (the other dogs are still getting together at all hours for their choir practice!lol!) And I actually got a little paranoid that my neighbor had somehow randomly read my blog and that's why her dog has been MIA. Come to think of it, I hope it's okay!

Stupid "Yip Dog"

realitycheck's picture

My neighbors have a stupid "Yip Dog". That's what I call it when ever I refer to it. I actually hate it. I never thought I could "hate" an animal, but this one's shitty. It makes one noise, and that is "Yip". But it makes this noise over, and over and over....
I have actually harvested really horrible thoughts about this dog...paintball gun is one of them. I really think I could blast that thing a few quick times before anyone would know it was me.
I have also debated sleeping pills. This seems like it could get expensive though.

It's not like i want harm to come tothe dog, I just want to get some F'N sleep! This stupid mutt is outside 24/7, yipping away.

Belong to the naked neighbor?

ModelMom's picture

Does this yipper belong to your neighbor that wont put a shade up on his bathroom window? (at least I think it was you...or maybe it was Intricate that has a nudie neighbor?...lol!) If it does maybe you can find a way to point a ray gun at the house and be done with both problems at once! :-P Ooo, that's mean of me. EvilBob might appreciate that one! LOL!
