This journal entry is dedicated to two very cliché phrases deeply embedded in the punk vocabulary. Both phrases are used to indicate an extreme like for some one or something.
The first: HEART
As in, “I heart My Chemical Romance or “I heart boys in eyeliner or “I heart myspace.com. In all of these phrases, heart is meant to imply “love or “like very much. It was perhaps inspired by shirts like the famous “I [heart symbol] New York. [Not necessarily those shirts exactly, but shirts or statements like that in general.] Punk kids say the word “heart in conversation instead of drawing on paper it to mean, “love. At first, this was clever. Now, as with most trends, this phrase is becoming annoying as hell. I move that this phrase be banned as soon as possible. It is not cute. It is not original. It needs to be buried.
The second: UBER
As in, “Hot Topic is uber cool or “My parents are uber lame; they won’t let me pierce my lip or “My pants are uber tight. I believe this term originates from the German word for “very. Correct me if I’m wrong. If it isn’t a direct translation, then the punk community certainly misunderstands it to mean “extremely or “very. As with the first phrase, the forerunners of this trend had every right to rock this word on any occasion. Now, it has lost its effect and has almost wormed its way into popular slang. Uber has become uber trite and should not be said ever again.
Anyways, more to come later. Hope this has been somewhat enlightening
