I Hate to Cook!

cooking | family life | flowers | Food

People who know me know that I don't like to cook. If you told me I could afford to eat good food and never cook another meal again, I'd throw a party. And dance on the table tops. And do whatever else I could think of to express my joy.

But since that doesn't seem to be happening (sigh), I do cook, although with very little flair. After making a delicious meal of four cheese bowtie pasta (from a prepared mix), with frozen vegetables (I did thaw them) and fake crab meat thrown in, I turned on the computer to find a web release about cooking.

Cooking with flowers.

What?

I know Mother's Day is coming up and we're all supposed to be planning to send flowers, but I had no idea that they could be used as part of a meal. Apparently for hundreds of years, cooks all over the world have been using flowers in the kitchen as more than just decoration. According to the web release, "The Romans added lavender to honey and used marigolds for their color and flavor. Recipes from all over Britain dating from the 17th and 18th centuries contain nasturtiums, borage, and lavender." Edible flowers went out of favor for a while but are now becoming "in style" once again.

Of course, anyone who just heads out to their flowerbeds to grab salad fixings might have a serious problem. If you are like me and you know less about flowers than you do about cooking, do some research and find out what kinds of flowers are edible before you get yourself killed sampling some poisonous petals.

Once you know what flowers are safe for you to eat, collect ones that are unsprayed and free of wildlife. Flowers might be good for cooking, but I'm not getting involved with cooking bugs. Sorry.

If you are using delicate flowers, add those to salads just before serving, especially if you are using an oil-based vinaigrette dressing. Sturdy flowers, like lavender, can be used when roasting meat and then discarded before serving. Rose petals can be used when decorating desserts or in jams. Borage, marigold petals, nasturtium, and others can also be used in various dishes.

In case I've aroused your appetite, check out Scotherbs (www.scotherbs.co.uk), which sells edible flowers. And don't take my word for what you can and can't eat. Remember, I made my dinner with frozen veggies, crab with a K, and pasta mix from a bag.

Craigslist Cooking Job

Ok, heres a confession. I read an article that said that people are looking for cooks and that posting an ad a CL is a great way to get a quick, fun job. So I did it. I also love to cook.
I had like 15 responses the first day. I chose a few people who I thought seemed nice. They were all creepy, weird, strange individuals.
One family was psycho. They would yell and scream at eachother all the time. They begged and beeged for my services but when I would go there they would act like they didn't invite me.
Then there was this one dude who was s ingle parent who'd hit on me and make sexual jokes all the time.
And there was a lady who lived alone who thought I was her personal assistant. She would ask me to go shopping for her, stop by the post office, etc.
Last there was a family who demanded to see my "licenses". They wanted to make sure I had a tax id and stuff. It was bizarre.
Anyways, the entire thing was weird. I wish you much better luck.

Oh my!

Maybe you should cook in your own home and then deliver it to people. I think I would hate to just go into stranger's homes. Too scary. You must be brave!

:)

Thanks!

Isn't a man allowed to enjoy cooking!

Isn't a man allowed to enjoy cooking! There isn't that many other things better than good food. Sex is, however. If you invite a woman over and cook for her then you might get the sex.

As far as cooking somone on Craigslist, I am not sure how serious I am even after posting. You definitely made me weary. I am just looking to make a fast buck I guess.

I just glanced at my comment and thought it said "I love the cock, too."

would have figured you different

would have figured you different

I think he was kidding...

I'm pretty sure he's kidding with you, James. He mentioned that he loves to cook too.

I can't imagine where the idea came from that cooking is a feminine thing. Many chefs are male - maybe most chefs...

chef is derived from chief

yea i know...chef is derived from the word chief. Chef might even mean chief in French.

Mav can be ornery when he wants. I wasn't hostile. I was testing the water.

I didn't know that.

Interesting!

You didn't sound hostile. Don't worry :)
