How to get people to read your blog

This will be a cynical post, so don't say I didn't warn you. So far it seems like all you have to do to get more reads is to put something controversial or money-related in the title.

For example, a blog entry that took me about 5 minutes to write got over 80 hits because I was angry when I wrote it. My blog posts pertaining to money have gotten a lot of hits as well.

But posts that I have spent FAR MORE TIME WRITING and therefore care more about have gotten way less hits. My Being John Malchovich analysis took me FOURTEEN HOURS to research and plan and then come up with the words. Charity is VERY important to me, and so far my recent post has only gotten 3 reads, and this really saddens me.

I understand that people want money, but helping others should be just as important. Even if you don't donate to charity, there are other ways to help as well, such as participating in walkathons and other fundraisers, and even visiting certain websites (http://www.thehungersite.com), so there is no excuse.

I feel better already.

I've noticed this as well, and yes it is really frustrating. Unfortunately, it seems to be a pattern on the web. My stupid "caffiene" blog currently stands with 95 hits, and I basically posted it as a joke, while some of my longer more well thought out posts have not received as much attention. Sad... I think I found it's best to save the longer more thought out articles to be posted where they will be more appreciated.

I've all but given up trying to figure out what will get hits. One "quickie" about blogging did well, another not so well. Some Devil's Dictionary bits people like, others they ignore. My top score right now is for a poem. A poem, begorrah. Nobody reads poetry! I'm just going to write away when and as I can, and maybe a pattern will emerge some day.

Yep, those are mine. Unless someone else is doing 'em and I don't know about it (there are three or four similar compilations elsewhere on the Web, I don't chat with any of the others, not so far anyway). Glad you find them enjoyable.

Don't let it get you down gang. You're building a readership here and I know that some of my more controversial stuff has gotten more hits, but I believe the extra hits are coming from within. If you have a good title, you should still get hits. 80 hits are awesome on this site!!
