The governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer, once known as the 'sheriff' of Wall Street who campaigned on a promise to clean up state politics, was embroilled in a sex scandal recently that threatened to force his resignation. An ignominous fall from grace!

A NEW YORK TIMES report linked him to a $1,000 an hour prostitute, saying he was caught on on a federal wiretap at least six times on FEB 12 and 13 arranging to meet her at a Washington Hotel in February.

The TIMES said he was the man described in court papers as Client 9 who patronised the Emperors Club, which federal investigators allege was a prostitution ring whose most expensive professionals charged more than US$5,ooo an hour.

Mr Spitzer,reportedly a married 48 year old Democrat who investigated prostitution as New York's attorney-general, apologised extensively and personally for what he described as a 'private matter' but did not mention his resignation. It may well be one of those cases were a decision will be made for him.

It may also be a case of how the mighty have fallen - a corrupt hypocrite bites the dust, in the western genre.
