How Porn Ruined Good Sex

Netscape recently removed the Sex Channel from their list of channels and replaced it with a number of new channels.
You may have noticed that the Sex Channel no longer appears in the list of channels in the right hand column on Netscape and that Sex is no longer an option when submitting stories to Netscape. When we first relaunched Netscape back in July, our hopes were that the Sex Channel would be a place where we could discuss issues pertaining to sex and sexuality in the 21st century’s ever-shrinking world.
In theory, the Sex Channel was a great idea (which could’ve become a great idea even in practice). I came across quite a few interesting and informative articles on sex, sexual health, and so forth. But like C.K. said, the Sex Channel became a never-ending nexus of spam and porn. Too many contributors were using the channel as an excuse to submit content that was either outright porn, or at least very close. Now thanks to them, the channel is no more.
The slack will inevitably be picked up by other sites, but this brings to light a larger question. If porn killed the sex channel, will hate-speech, anti-antisemitism, and political propaganda kill the Politics Channel? Or, what if the Technology Channel became a place to trade serial numbers, torrents, and so forth, will we kill that too? Or, what if the Books, Movies, and Music Channels turn into a complete copyright nightmare, what then?
In the short-term, and with limited resources, Netscape has made the right move. Given the resources necessary, however, Netscape would ideally teach the people what is right, and create an environment in which community leaders rise to the challenge and lead by example. This responsibility lies with you. The Netscape community is doing a stellar job overall, however, there are still those that post content that is in violation of the terms of service. The power lies with the community, the onus is on us to help Netscape grow. Please help shape the community by contributing good content, and not destroy it by posting spam, porn, etc.
