How I Freaked Out My Boss & Got Away With It

A few days ago my boss, who will be called N from now on, asked me all sorts of questions about my driving. Did I have my license, how much experience did I have, et cetera. Eventually I said, "It kinda sounds like you want me to drive somewhere, and that doesn't sound like a very awsome idea."

N went on to explain that he doesn't feel very comfortable on the highway, gets nervous and has the urge to swerve all over the road, so he asked me if I could drive him to Saint Catharines so that he could go into the Walmart there and pick up a brand new TV he wanted badly enough to let me drive his car ...

The pay was $20.00

I don't have my license, only my G1, which means that I can only drive when someone with a real licence is in the car with me, and not on the highway, but once again, N was desparate. He told me he would pay for the ticket I would get if we were pulled over.

So, we set a date and the next morning he picked me up. He drove us out of town, pulled over, and I took the wheel.

"You're not one of those nervous drivers, are you?" He asked.

"Getting all the important questions in while you still can?" I asked back, and he sort of chuckled nervously.

Personally I thought I was doing great. It was only a two lane highway, I stayed on the speed limit, even 5 km under just to keep N happy.

But people have a habit of going about 20 km OVER the limit when on a highway, and so a big line of cars was soon behind us, honking.

N usually pulls the car over and lets the cars pass, but since I wasn't like that, he began to sweat. To solve this problem, I decided to pick up the pace and went 5 km over the limit, as there are tiny hills on this highway, and N wanted me to slow down before each one, this did not help too much.

"Slow down, slow down!" He was saying. I wasn't looking at him, but you can always tell when someone is panicking by their voice.

"Turn here! Turn here!" There was a turn coming up, so naturally I thought he wanted me to turn. He was actually telling me to pull over, and I didn't know this until we were in the next road. Luckily there were no more cars, and so I pulled over and he took the wheel back.

We weren't five minutes out of Saint Catharines.

"I'm all nervous now." He said, pointing to his slightly shaking hands.

I kind of laughed at him.

"Poor N," I said. "Thought he was going to get a nice relaxing drive and instead he gets me." He laughed and we were back on the road. We were close enough to our destination that he felt comfortable, so we went to Walmart and I helped him get the TV into the car, but he would not let me behind the wheel again.

I had to talk him through the drive back into Welland.

When we got back into town, he handed me my twenty bucks and all was well. I got some more driving experience, N learned a valuable lesson about beginning drivers, and I made some easy money.

We don't speak of the driving incident though. Can't imagine why ...
