How does one decide that they wish to become a designer of chairs?
Stackable Chairs! An odd topic for a blog entry but I thought I would accept the challenge.
Chairs can be works of art as well as functional. A good design combines both, good artistic asthetic form and comfort and function. I can appreciate both a purely functional chair and a highly ornate chair.
I am curious how one would become a designer of chairs. Chairs have a long history and one would expect that everything possible in a chair design has already been tried. However, I have sat in uncomfortable chairs, helped try and unstack chairs there were very stuck together, seen chairs that simply did not last long.
I think lawn chairs should be referred to as disposable since they rarely last even a full season! Now there is a category of chair that needs some fresh ideas! Admittedlly those ones that completely fold up into a small tube are pretty decent.
Do you wake up one day with a brilliant new idea for a chair and then become a chair designer? Is this something they give new design school graduates as a sort of initiation test? Do you make an excellant camp stool at the family camping trip and someone suggests, " You should become a chair designer!"
Well if this has you interested in chairs, stackable chairs, or otherwise keep reading. I am more intrigued now. I always took chairs for granted.
In its gradual evolution from periods of earliest civilization, the history of furniture parallels the progress of culture. Furniture has been made in a great variety of materials and decorated by many methods, the most usual being inlaying, painting or gilding, wood carving, veneering, and marquetry. Western furniture has drawn motifs of ornament from four main sources: Egyptian, Asian (Persian and Chinese), Greek, and Gothic. Probably the first pieces to be in demand were the chest, the stool (prototype of the chair), the table, and the bed. From remote times Oriental furniture has exhibited carving and inlay on ebony and teak. Egyptian pieces 6,000 years old display an advanced form of woodworking, structure, and decoration and are characterized by inlays of gold and ivory and by carved supports representing animal forms. The Greeks favored the low couch, the tripod, and a chair with graceful, curved outlines. The Romans adopted Greek and Etruscan forms and during the imperial period developed many ornately decorated variations. The 20th century saw an increasing use of technology in chair construction with such things as all-metal folding chairs, metal-legged chairs, the Slumber Chair, moulded plastic chairs and ergonomic chairs. The recliner (easy chair) became a popular form, at least in part due to radio and television, and later a two-part The modern movement of the 1960s produced new forms of chairs: the butterfly chair, Bean bags, the egg or pod chair. Technological advances led to molded plywood and laminate wood chairs, as well as chairs made of leather or polymers. Massage chairs are now sold and used in homes all over the world.
