Last year, I was almost overwhelmed by the amount of homework my kindergartener had to do. Many nights we spent between 1 - 2 hours doing homework. I didn't have to do that much in fifth grade.

During that time, I really got a lot of food for thought. Is there really anything to gain from forcing a frustrated child to do that much homework nightly? The school he attended sent so many things home that they expected the parent to teach to their children. What was the purpose of sending him to public school if they expected the parents to teach all that? Even though I didn't realize it at the time, I had already made the choice to homeschool.

A mother performs many roles, including teacher. We teach our children all through their lives from the basics as a baby to dealing with adulthood as adults. That's why many of us are quite qualified to teach our own children by homeschooling. A public school teacher has a degree to teach a classroom full of children, but a mom is already equipped to teach her own child/children. A mother doesn't require a degree to teach her own child. We get practice daily!
