After a nearly ten-year slump, veteran Hong Kong action director and filmmaker Tsui Siu-ming is back with a new production company and plans to revive Hong Kong's beleaguered film industry.

Tsui intends to produce 15 films over the next two years in-house at Sundream Motion Pictures, a production company founded in 2003 that he presides over.

In contrast to recent attempts by Chinese filmmakers to strike it big with international successes akin to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tsui plans to focus on small and mid-size productions to foster young, local talent and bring in steady profits.

With a US$16 million budget, Fist of Love is a new movie set to begin production in April.

Tsui began his filmmaking career at the height of Hong Kong's kung fu movie boom beginning in 1980 by co-directing The Buddhist Fist with Yuen Wo-ping. He went on to be one of the first Hong Kong filmmakers to direct a co-production with mainland China in Holy Robe of Shaolin Temple (1985).

Regarding martial arts movies, Tsui believes that viewer perception of a good film shouldn't be limited to this genre.

"We cannot just stick with this kind of topic," Mak says.
